Four mutilated bodies were unearthed in the Gunness home backyard in LaPorte Indiana after a recent fire. Victims include John Heldgren of Aberdeen and Mrs Gunness’s adopted daughter. two others, a male and female, were also found. Authorities suspect Ray Tuam-Dhere, jailed for murdering Mrs Gunness and the children, holds further clues.
Fire at 4 a.m. in Jefferson South Dakota destroyed the brick opera house block occupied by J D Fountain saloon and spread to a frame pool bath owned by Md Deraniviu. Losses and insurance details are cited with unclear cause and delayed response from Sioux City department.
In Wheaton May 7 the board of county commissioners will decide which of the towns Platte Geddes or Andes can appear on the ballot for county seat honors. If petitions bear enough valid names the process to gather more petitions starts immediately. Andes and Geddes lead the contest with Platte still hopeful.
Platte South Dakota prepares for a three day firemen’s picnic from May 27 to 29 with all district volunteer departments represented. The event features contests between teams and individuals, funded by business sponsors who have guaranteed prizes and added rewards for winners.
Jacob Anderson, branded an undesirable citizen, was banished from Viborg South Dakota after a warrant by Albert Apland alleging he threatened his life. Justice Hanson ordered Anderson to leave within two hours and not return, a command he obeyed immediately.

John Lockhart of Pierre is nominated by Hughes county stalwarts as the candidate for state senate representing Hughes Hyde and Sully counties in the district.
Joseph Robinson, a pioneer settler, was paralyzed when he fell from a load of goods near Midland, South Dakota. He died later in a local hospital.
Chicago May 7 Judge Ball of the superior court ruled that marriages solemnized in Indiana within a year after a divorce in Illinois cannot be recognized by Illinois law.
Sioux Falls May 19 hosts the 33rd annual Grand Lodge session of South Dakota I O O F and the 19th annual Daughters of Rebekah assembly. Grand Secretary Harvey J. Rice reports 138 lodges with 8 704 members year ending December 31 1907. Receipts totaled 87 665 90 with 12 333 85 paid to relief burial and state aid. Invested funds reach 247 858 75 and 22 000 in the home fund. Rebekah lodges total 90 with 4 856 members and receipts 7 022 05 with 838 80 for relief. All lodges appear prosperous.
Weosington Springs South Dakota May 6 One farmer works to right a wrong after a disastrous gunfire fire in Shan County. He offers to surrender for criminal prosecution and has converted property into money in a bank for distribution to fire victims.
Indian school basketball team traveled to Oacoma and defeated the high school team 28 to 10. The dusky maidens also beat white girls in Chamberlain and are ready to play any team within 100 miles. Starters included Daisy Robinson Flora Claymore Mabel Lezire Hazel Bresver Eunice Williams Dolly Colone.
Articles of incorporation filed with the secretary of state list firms in multiple cities. Notable entities include Virginia Railroad Co in Huron with 5,000,000 dollars, Bunsen's Smokeless Furnace Co in Pierre at 1,000,000 dollars, Dr Munson Electric Medical Co in Pierre at 200,000 dollars, and Kentucky Realty and Trust Co in Huron at 50,000 dollars, among others.
Watertown South Dakota May 6 General C H Englesby reports the federal bureau of fisheries will ship wall eyed pike from Manchester Wisconsin to Watertown to restock Lake Kampeska. The lake has been seined two weeks removing gar carp and buffalo to protect game fish. About 100 tons of pirate fish have been removed and officials believe Kampeska is now free of objectionable species.
Sioux Falls May 5 The state board of railroad commissioners heard complaints about high milk and cream shipping rates. A hearing in June was postponed due to an Interstate Commerce Commission session in Chicago on June 12. South Dakota will be represented by Professor A H Wheaton and the railroad commission. The group discussed Great Northern and Chicago & North Western railroads plans to build a trivel connecting lines at Huron and other local telegraph depot issues.
The Iowa Tank line plans two large storage tanks in Waron South Dakota as a key distributive point. Owner C Wicks announced the project aims to create a major local hub. Project cost is estimated between 9500 and 7000 dollars.
Edith Madso won the Yankton high school declamation contest and will represent Yankton in the sixth annual state contest set for May 15.
Huron Gas and Electric Railway of Huron South Dakota has awarded a contract for the survey of its Huron to Aberdeen line. Cross Mack civil engineers of Minneapolis won the bid. The route runs from Huron to a Spink county point midway between Lake Byron and Dolan, then surveys into Aberdeen. Right of way work will follow as local interest grows.
London May 5 The Berlin Correspondent says the Kaiser intervened in Norway’s diplomatic appointment involving Fritjof Nansen resigning and M Ditten, Norway’s Berlin minister, to London. The Kaiser’s views forced Norway to back away or risk strained relations. Ditten remains in Berlin and J Irgans would replace Nansen. No independent confirmation.
Armour May 5 report that the Armour Herald has been sold to Mathews and Hagen from editor W. T. Dawson who had led the paper for two years.
Gustave Kammel, 70, found guilty of manslaughter in the first degree after a 10 hour jury vote. Judge Boucher sentences him to ten years with two months for possible new trial or bail motions. Case centered on the death of his wife from arsenic poisoning and a sick son, amid a contested property sale motive.
In Yankton South Dakota on May 4 a five year old boy Peter Rudd died after being accidentally shot in the brain by his sister, age 38, with a .22 rifle.
Huron May 4 Ex Congressman John A Pickler of Faulkton South Dakota is not expected to live from day to day his illness a chronic disgrace spent the winter in the southern climate seeking relief but failed to improve his condition
The St. Louis express on the Pennsylvania railroad was held up ten miles west of Pittsburgh. Two men robbed the car east of Walker's Mill, tied messenger Noah H. Roshon, and escaped with four sealed bags of mail and some gold bullion. The Adams Express company has not commented. Police seek more details as they question the messenger.
Vienna reports Countess Gizycki daughter of Chicago’s R. W. Patterson plans a divorce in America to wed an English politician. The move to sue in the United States follows perceived continental barriers. Tensions between the couple have escalated in recent weeks, with a brother of the countess set to arrive soon to influence the next steps.
The trial of Henry J. Lord a wealthy poultry raiser of Trumbull Conn and Kansas City against his wife Emanuel Augustine Lord began. He accuses her of improprieties with their negro coachman Harry Cameron at their Trumbull residence. Letters claimed to be from Mrs Lord were read. Custody of a 4 year old daughter is sought.
Emil Meyers a Webster, South Dakota hotel owner, was arrested in Marshall, Minnesota, after a dramatic chase across eastern South Dakota. He faces a criminal assault charge involving a 13 year old girl from Webster. The enraged father reportedly disciplined the suspect on the scene.
Dallas S D May 2 John Scriven United States allotting agent for the Rosebud area in Tripp county has resumed work for the season to locate Sioux Indians who wish to time in Tripp county When this is done the surplus in land in Tripp county totaling about 1 000 000 acres will be opened for settlement by Roosevelt proclamation.
The 8-year-old daughter of Julius Rudd of James River accidentally shot her 5-year-old brother through the brain. The boy remains in the hospital and alive.
Snow and wind swept the Black Hills region near Spearfish. Young calves perished by the hundreds due to exposure and frost as fruit crops suffered irreparably from the cold blast. Weather piled snow drifts up to two feet with freezing temperatures across Deadwood and surrounding areas.
John Lysinger escaped from the Chamberlain county jail with a pony stolen nearby and fled to the prairies after which the pony was abandoned. He was under a 15 year sentence for a statutory offense and was awaiting parole. It is believed he had help.

New York May 1 Emma Hames the opera star sues in the supreme court to recover property from Julian Story her former husband claiming goods from Paris Vallombrosa Italy were never delivered and later used by him valued at 20000 including a grand piano watercolors bronzes and many decorative items she also seeks clothing photographs books and furniture returned with the suit asserting ownership and conversion by Story.
In Renoesteel S D May 1 a question arises if an Indian agent can act against an Indian citizen holding government allotment land. An Indian policeman under the agent arrested Chasing Crane for dancing against prohibition and Crane served ten days on the woodpile. County authorities seized the policemen as they left the reservation in Gregory County and placed them on bond. a trial is expected.
The county suffered severe damage from a recent cold wave with fruit losses estimated between 25 000 and 50 000 dollars. Miss Hilda Larson, injured earlier, again works at the central telephone exchange.
Kennebec is pursuing incorporation as a city under state laws. A committee will work with the county surveyor to survey and plat the proposed territory. A special election will be held for residents to vote on including the area within town limits.
Mrs. Frank Gould denies divorce rumors saying newspapers began suits without her knowledge and that her husband went away for a rest to Hot Springs. She states their relationship is not strained and rejects reports of reconciliations as rot. The Gould home remains open to him if he returns.

A blaze on the Jamestown exposition grounds in Norfolk Virginia destroyed several colonial buildings and scorched the Michigan pavilion. The fire was checked within 50 feet of the largest states exhibit palace with no large financial loss reported.
