An injunction issued by Judge F G Smith restrains P J Burke and C H Dewald from erecting the farmers elevators on the site chosen February 12 by the Milwaukee Railroad company. The 1902 act bars construction within 100 feet of existing structures. A permanent injunction seems likely, risking crop profits and thousands in costs for farmers.
Sioux Wells May 14. After a day and night of deliberation the jury in the libel suit by Joe Kirby against W T Lafollette editor of the Mitchell Gazette reported they could not agree on a verdict. Judge Jones discharged the panel. both sides claimed the case centers on Lafollette coverage of the Kaufmann murder and the truth of the published statements.
The Interstate Commerce Commission reports that express firms for perishable goods operate order and commission departments to market products for growers. The commission finds agents may not buy or sell on their own account and recommends continuing current operations while prohibiting self dealing.
May 14 Pittsburg reports an outbreak of pink-eye among a privileged social circle near Fifth Shady Center and Bidwell. The illness spreads through close contact at pink teas and bridge whist events with eye rubbing aiding transmission.
Reported in New York on May 14 that Hetty Green, living at the Plaza, received a letter signed The Black Hand demanding 5000 dollars. She moved from the hotel to her Chemical National Bank office with hotel detectives guiding her to Madison Avenue and left the Fifty eighth Street entrance.
A bell fourche dispatch reports Camp Crook in the northwest nearly wiped out by a late day blaze. The fire consumed nearly all business houses except the Little Missouri bank with losses exceeding 200000. R IL Shunnings and Like and Devines stores suffered heavy damage and many residences were destroyed as winds fanned the flames.
Peter Becker 77, longtime Pleasant Valley settler in Lincoln County, died by suicide at his son in law Sam Milliken’s home three miles northwest of Beresford. He reportedly vowed to end his life when he could no longer be a burden to others after a long, itinerant life including eight trips to Switzerland.
Bonesteel May 13 Colombe in Tripp county moves toward legal existence. It sits on Chris Colombe’s allotment about 12 miles west of Dallas along last fall railroad survey. Government patent received and town lots surveyed.
The remains of Charley Williams arrived from New Mexico after a pneumonia death last Sunday. An early Union County settler and founder of Alcester’s first bank, he was a prominent citizen. The funeral at Hawarden was conducted by the Masonic lodge with Alcester Masons in attendance. Mrs. Williams and their son Louie accompanied the casket.

Beresford South Dakota resident Nels Frieberg returned home from Chicago after undergoing an eye removal to halt a tumorous growth in the eyeball. Doctors said the disease was unusual and the operation was necessary to preserve his life.
In Pittsburg on May 13 Captain Trevet of the Salvation Army preached on After Death What while standing in a coffin and wearing a death shroud at the Penn Avenue barracks. A procession of six men bore a coffin with a silver plate as mournful dirges played, drawing a large curious crowd from the slums.
Sioux Falls is buzzing as Sheriff Nelson detains Dr Ferdinand Lewis a New York dentist accused of wife abandonment. Detective Edward Rogens transfers him to New York authorities with plans to prosecute under New York law. Lewis claims innocence and vows to resettle in Sioux Falls after trouble ends.
Watertown South Carolina May 12. H G Hundredmark dean dies six days after a stroke of apoplexy. A well known attorney he practiced before all state courts and served as city attorney for Watertown and two terms as Codington county prosecuting attorney. He led lodge work for the Elks and Modern Woodmen of America, holding the highest office in the latter group.
Jacob E. Tschetter reports two valuable young horses stolen from his farm seven miles south of Bridgewater. A former neighbor seen recently is suspected. A $28 reward is offered as officers scour the countryside for the thief.
Chamberlain S D May 12 Rumor of a new railroad bridge at Milwaukee renews after the Milwaukee company refused a petition for a wholesale house site on its ground near the river. The refusal cited the location on the bridge approach as previously chosen for a permanent bridge site.
Vice President Willard and Burlington officials visited Lead to advance a trolley line from Lead to Terry, continuing the Deadwood to Lead system. The project ties mining camps and cities, signaling expansion of regional transit.
Johnnies Jenks an elderly Irishman who spent 20 years in the county poor house died in Freeport Illinois as the $100,000 estate willed to him by Mrs Lucy Milles in San Francisco was about to be transferred. He never married and was a local pioneer settler found by California attorneys during probate steps.
The Illinois Commercial mens association began an investigation of hotels nationwide to identify fire traps after the New Aveline hotel fire in Fort Wayne. Secretary Cavanaugh was directed to email all 46,000 members requesting hotel condition reports. Three members died in Fort Wayne.
Charles N. Brown dies in Sioux Falls penitentiary after serving a 10 year term for a bold South Dakota forgery. He formerly posed as Troy E. Hardy to obtain a 1100 loan from Orion Porter in Gregory county and forged mortgages on property he did not own. Brown had a prior Nebraska horse stealing record and admitted to multiple fraudulent acts before his arrest and guilty plea.
Vermillion plans a June 9 election on issuing $20,000 bonds to build a new opera house. The city currently lacks a public meeting venue as the old opera house has been condemned.
Washington May 11 The Department of Agriculture reports winter wheat area to harvest at 29 751 000 acres, down 4.2 percent from last fall and up 3.8 percent from last year. May 1 condition 89 percent of normal, spring plowing 66.6 percent complete, spring planting 4.7 percent complete.
In Butte Montana on May 11 Lewis Ferris an Italian youth gives a confession about dynamiting a Burlington train near Bird Friday night killing two men He says he broke a powder house lock stole 45 sticks of dynamite and placed it on the tracks He watched the blast then helped the conductor summon aid Ferris led officers to the powder house and scene claiming sole blame and that he was drunk at the time He appears half witted in demeanor.
In Vienna on May 11 heads of German princely houses led by Emperor William gathered to honor Emperor Francis Joseph on the diamond jubilee of his reign. William praised Francis Joseph’s 60 years of service and the gathering included many sovereigns and princes such as August William, Victoria Louise, Leopold of Bavaria, and rulers of Saxony Württemberg Baden Saxe-Weimar Oldenburg Mecklenburg Schwerin Anhalt Lippe Schaumburg-Lippe.
Brookings S D May 9 Professor N E Hansen director of seed culture at the agricultural college has been granted leave to undertake his fourth Siberian expedition for hardy fruit and forage plants. The trip hinges on congressional funding and aims to gather seeds from current year crops in remote Siberian regions. Hanson notes his first Europe trip yielded nine tons of Turkestan alfalfa whose shipment has broadly benefited the United States, especially the northwest, financially.
Sioux Falls reports that Julia Ann O Grady, who was arrested last fall for allegedly shooting her husband, has been deemed insane and placed in an Oklahoma asylum. Guardian W L Baker disclosed the information. the murder case was dismissed for insufficient evidence.
Fairfax May 9 jury acquits Dettman in a murder case after a brief deliberation. The verdict follows testimony that Dettman faced Taylor after a dispute at a pool hall, Taylor struck him with a revolver, a struggle occurred, and Dettman fired as Taylor resumed violent action.
Tripp South Dakota May 9 The Hutchinson County Agricultural Fair Association with 5000 capital stock and headquarters in Tripp elected a seven member board. Fritz Lang was named president Cornelius Martin vice president Henry Klatt Jr secretary and J W Schliessmann treasurer The group has 3000 subscribed stock and secured an option for fair grounds and track planning a first fair and carnival in September.
In Watertown South Dakota on May 9 Judge Marquis hears a novel case. Joseph Handley imprisoned for a statutory crime is recalled to testify against partner Flora Pschakart. Handley refuses to testify citing self incrimination and protection of the law. The court must decide if his conduct warrants additional contempt punishment or legal protection from testimony.
Virginia Minnesota May 9 Thomas Urin a miner tied a stick of dynamite to his neck and had four women witness the blast. He lit the fuse causing an explosion that wrecked the boardinghouse and injured one woman. Urin's remains have not yet been recovered.
In Brooklyn on May 9 Joseph Hammer a fireman saved an eight month old by carrying the child in his teeth from a fourth story tenement at 10 Saratoga avenue. He needed the bite to free his hands for the dangerous descent.
The white fox terrier Kaiser owned by H. P. Kingsland of New York was exhumed after embalming and buried with ceremony in the Kingsland dog cemetery in Ocean township near Elberon Long Branch New Jersey. The dog had been sent to St Augustine Florida last winter for treatment by a specialist before its return north for burial.
New York on May 12 Teddy the Skye terrier of Mrs. Katharine C. Fay was taken from an undertaker and buried in a Hartsdale dog cemetery. The dog valued at 1500 dollars died of pneumonia and will have a marble shaft and a silver name plate inscribed for its grave.
Teddy Fay was born September 1900 and died in May 1908. The brief notice records these two key life dates for the child named Teddy Fay.
Minneapolis police follow Laporte Indiana murders to Bella Guinness and her husband Joseph. Investigators hold 14 year old photos of the couple found in a Laporte farmhouse ruin. The Guinnesses lived in Minneapolis before moving to Chicago where they wed.
