The Republican State Committee calls a delegate convention in Huron on April 7 1908 at noon to elect eight delegates and eight alternates for the national convention in Chicago June 16 1908. Delegates allocated by county reflect votes for Governor Crawford in 1906 with a total county-by-county enumeration. Additional precincts and meeting places listed for Mitchell and surrounding townships.
The Davison county Republican committee schedules a county convention in Mitchell to choose delegates to the state GOP and national conventions. Representation is set at one delegate per 25 votes for Crawford in 1906 plus one per precinct, totaling 16 precincts and 16 delegates. Primary elections are set for March 10, 1908, from 3 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. at specified polling places including Mt Vernon and Mitchell.
The Dakotan faced a tough challenge against Charley Burke for Hughes County but gained strong support from the state capital. The paper notes pride in the outcome and the home-man backing.
The state convention at Huron is narrowing to a clash between stalwarts and insurgents. Insurgents claim a large majority earlier, but now face dwindling margins and possible defeats. Contests against stalwart delegations may hinge on Stanley and McPherson counties where insurgent delegates were placed against primary law. The insurgents’ bid appears desperate as they threaten challenges that could reverse expected outcomes.
The insurgents’ share tumbled from 189 to 12 as Walworth and Hutchinson counties tied. Hamlin county claims four delegates, but records show nine stalwart delegates from Hamlin. Hamlin leaders may assert independence and demand counting among stalwarts at the April 7 Huron convention.
Sioux Falls dispatch challenges insurgent claims from Sioux Falls headquarters about Davison county results. The correspondent says Crawford will not win the county popular vote and that stalwarts hold thirteen county convention delegates, with a 200 margin in the local vote.
The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports a narrow insurgent lead in the April convention, aided by spending and speakers. It notes Governor Crawford’s shift in stance, asserts the stalwarts won March, and urges continued mobilization to ensure Kittredge’s senate victory and stalwart ticket nomination in June.
The Aberdeen American Renewed critique of insurgents alleging unfair primary tactics. Insurgents allegedly usurped rights in several counties and seek to contest Davison county results. Stalwarts defend a Kiltreuge slate and vow Davison delegates will back stalwart measures at the Huron convention.
