The controller of the currency notes the December call on national banks in South Dakota showed deposits rose. From August to December distress did not hurt banks with national deposits up by 2,780,401 and total national bank deposits at 20,928,322 in December. State banks aided the increase.
Theodore Lothman, a tallow merchant, was killed in his shanty by the Big Sioux river three miles northeast of town. An assistant described a gunman who forced entry, then fled as shots were fired. The assistant is detained by Sheriff Nelson. Lothman, 50s, resided in Gary Indiana with his family. The shotgun blast destroyed the top of his head. robbery is suspected. Coroner’s inquiry yielded only five cents from Lothman’s pockets.
Glenn Starr, in Plankinton South Dakota, faces a new bigamy charge. Sheriff records note Starr married Mary Karr on June 12, 1906 in Marshall Minnesota, deserted December 3, 1906, then wed Nellie Everett in June 1907 at Rock Valley Iowa without divorce. Mary Karr sues for divorce. she has a seven month old baby.
Five business buildings burned in Gary South Dakota at midnight Saturday. J R Fonger drug store M M Schlitz harness John Hancock pool hall Vandawarker Farnum cream station and Wells general merchandise were destroyed. Wells building brick and last to burn. Total loss about $14 000 with $6 000 insured. Fire started in back room of harness shop.

At a lively Lake Andes meeting the local commercial club was organized with officers elected: President H. W. Johnson, Vice President G. M. Caster, Secretary J. W. Corey, Treasurer Herman Mencke. Sixteen new members joined the club.
Dr. H. C. Burch, longtime physician and current mayor of Redfield South Dakota, died Sunday morning at 5 o'clock after a weeklong battle with cerebrospinal meningitis.
Sioux Falls reports a spring influx of new settlers far above recent years. An estimated 1 500 to 2 000 carloads of stock machinery and household goods have been moved into the state as eastern farmers such as Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa relocate. Officials expect 20 000 to 50 000 newcomers and households to settle across eastern and central South Dakota this season.
Moses Iron Cloud an educated Sioux from Yankton agency fired a shotgun at his chest rather than face arrest by agency police. After drinking heavily and becoming rowdy he fled toward home and, cornered in a Bates residence, shot himself dead rather than be captured.
Lake Andes South Dakota March 18 A flow has been struck in the second of two giant artesian wells drilled by the United States government to raise Lake Andes water levels. The flow occurred at 710 feet and the contractor plans to drill about 50 feet deeper to reach stronger flow. The combined output will constantly feed the lake, enhancing the town’s famed water body.
Springfield South Dakota March 18 mystery surrounds the recent disappearance of Oliver Nelson a well known farmer who had resided near the place for some time. He left his family in destitute circumstances. Relations were pleasant and he was not a drinking man so no reason can be assigned for his leaving the country.
Bridgewater South Dakota March 18 J M Moser a real estate dealer here was seriously burned about the face and neck when he tried to clean soot from his chimney by placing powder in the stove triggering a terriffic explosion injuring one eye and causing facial injuries.
Vermillion March 18 The debate between the University of South Dakota and Creighton University of Omaha ended with South Dakota the winner. South Dakota previously lost to North Dakota at Grand Forks Friday evening.
South Dakota railroad commission heard complaints from Philip business interests about freight rates west of the Missouri River. Albert Wagner cited wire and meat rates to illustrate alleged discrimination and extra charges for emigrant cars. Pierre’s railroad defended that interstate rates fall outside its review and pledged to examine and justify or adjust alleged discriminations based on operating costs and freight volume.
Harry Wentzy chairman of South Dakota Democratic state committee and publisher of the Pukwana Press-Reporter partners with Bert T. Barnes to launch a new Democratic newspaper in Rapid City. They bought a complete Chicago outfit with a Mergenthaler typesetter and will merge with Barnes printing plant to form a well equipped office. The publication named Gate City Guide nods to Rapid City's Gate City nickname for the Black Hills region.
Jere IX. Cooke the deposed Hemstead rector and Floretta Whaley, with whom he eloped, are ill and destitute in San Francisco according to a telegram to Floretta’s grandmother Mrs. Kezieh Whaley. The message asks for help and notes $6,000 in trust at Hempstead though the grandmother will not rush aid without clearer information.
New York March 17 Harry K Thaw denies insanity and seeks dismissal in Evelyn Nesbit Thaw suit. His answer was delivered to Daniel O Reilly and the case will be placed on the supreme court trial calendar next week. Thaw’s counsel Russell Peabody says the case will be vigorously contested.
The United States cruiser Milwaukee in Admiral Swinburne's squadron returned from target practice to Magdelena Bay and reported a daring robbery. About 38500 in gold was stolen from the paymaster's room by a duty onboard crew member. A search of the ship and four enlisted men failed to locate the thief or money, with the gold believed hidden aboard.
The Hinsey hay ranch, 1290 acres six miles west of Vermillion, was sold last week through John Morrison to Morris Quick of Quick City Missouri. The price was 90 300 dollars at 70 dollars per acre, the largest deal in the county to date.
A 21 year old man named Jake Ze man, described as demented, terrorized farmers near Huron South Dakota then rode a horse all night and damaged mail boxes and harnesses before being sent to Knoxville Institute in Iowa for treatment.

Dominic Rosso arrives from Minneapolis and claims Rose Adams, killed by her adopted mother Mrs. Henry Harbour, was actually Rose Rosso, daughter of a Minneapolis businessman. He says the child was kidnapped from a Catholic Omaha home, later adopted, and that a mysterious woman once took the infant for a week before vanishing.

Telegraph operator rose to superintendent roles with American Peoples Magnetic Western Union and International Ocean. aided Civil War telegraph operations including submarine cable to Rock River and news of Monitor Merrimac victory. Heiss ordered telegraph shutdown after Lincoln’s assassination at Ford's Theatre.
Senator Gamble won a favorable committee report on Senate 204 to restore annuities to the Medawakanton Wahpokoota Santee Sioux forfeited by the 1863 act after the Minnesota massacres. The claim, about 1.5 million dollars, goes to the court of claims for judgment. a prior bill for Sisseton Wahpeton yielded about 800 thousand dollars after court review.
