The Mitchell Institution week included baccalaureate and annual sermons, a musical recital, and a reception. Juniors staged a burlesque at the social, while Y M C A and Y W C A exercises were led by Miss Blanchard with papers by Geo Potter. Dr Brush’s and Rev Jenkins’s sermons drew full audiences at the opera house.
Ethan Colton discusses the Christian spirit in college life as entering freshmen are listed. Rev Dr Brush of Ottumwa delivers a baccalaureate sermon on The Cultural Power of Human Intercourse at the Grand Opera House with choirs and prayers marking the day.
Dr Frank Brush of Ottumwa Iowa addressed a large audience at Mitchells Grand Opera House Monday evening speaking on Visions and Life. Dr Graham introduced him noting Brush is well known to local readers. The lecture attracted keen attention and displayed scholarly research into the topic.
Mitchell marks the public schools closing with a packed corn palace audience of about 1150. A large class of 13 girls and 5 boys receives diplomas after a program of music, prayers, salutations, and eleven orations plus essays, praised for character and progress.
The passage commends teachers and pupils for their close application to business and notes the popularity of Mitchell's schools across the state. It expresses hope that teachers and students will enjoy their vacation happily and pleasantly.
The graduating class reunion and banquet at The Mitchell drew 58 guests for a formal reception and a fine literary program. Landlord Johnston received praise for menu planning as Everett White presided. performances included mandolin music, solos by Laura Daniels and Mary McGovern, and toasts by Wm. Herbert and Cyrus Warne. The event ended with Auld Lang Syne and a note that the 98 class gathering would be long remembered.
