Daily increasing trade thanked as we announce a comprehensive clearance. Hats, caps, dresses, corsets, hosiery, linens, tableware, and men’s and boys’ wear heavily discounted. Clothing stock must be sold with prices slashed across all items, including 600 pairs of hosiery and 200 ladies wrappers.
Ethan T. Colton won the inter state oratorical contest at Vermillion as Dakota University students lined the route with cheers. Rev Stevens addressed the graduating class and Mitch ell Volunteer Militia maintained the company.
The inter-state association judging by the text saw Colton of Mitchell win the contest with Hupbell of Fargo second and Geary of Brookings third. Mitchell and its university celebrate the achievement praising Colton’s strong oratory. A gold medal is presented as the trophy. The next meeting will be hosted in North Dakota.
At a regular meeting of the Rebekan lodge on Saturday evening the officers were elected including N G Lizzie Saul, V G Clara A Lukens, Secretary Nettie Johnson, Treasurer Marie Neilsen, and Trustees Maggie Perry for one year and Catharine Bloss for six months. Mrs Bloss read her report for the Rebekah assembly in Sioux Falls. Installation is set for the first July meeting.
Sunday evening Rev. A C Stevens delivered the baccalaureate sermon to Mitchell High School graduates of 1898 in the corn palace. An audience of 900 to 1000 filled the building as seats overflowed into the gallery. Supt Quigley and Prof Grace led the class from the high school to the corn palace and the service was opened and closed with prayers by Rev Burleigh of the Congregational church and Rev Durant of the Episcopal church.
Rev Stevens delivered a sermon to graduating students focusing on fairness honesty uprightness and reverence for religion. He urged light burdens and personal effort to do right. Hymn singing and a benediction by Rev Durant ended the event.
A city volunteer company grows to about 50 men as Decoration Day enrollments add 20 more. Adjutant General Humphrey backs completing the home unit despite the broader draft, citing Mitchell’s prominence and regional needs. Debate continues on organizing another cavalry regiment and a Senate bill to temporarily boost the US army with Edmond F. English named colonel for twelve troops to serve in the Philippines.
A poster in the Republican office promotes a book with over 200 halftone Navy views and a large map of Spanish possessions and war regions. It sells for 25 cents. It offers free copies to subscribing readers who settle arrears and prepay. Supply is limited.
City officials announce the replacement of worn plank walks on Main Street with cement sidewalks. The project will substitute the old wooden planks with durable concrete paths, improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians and nearby businesses.
John Laidlaw wed Miss Davenport in a ceremony noted as Wednesday. City council moved to replace plank walks with cement, condemning sidewalks in Main Street blocks First through Third and areas in front of Spooner and Nordaker. Meeting approved auditors' and treasurer reports, granted a 175 loan to the fire department, and set deadlines for cement sidewalks and hydrant ordinance updates.
Miss Sadie Davenport of Mitchell and Mr. John Laidlaw of Alexandria were married Wednesday at 9 30 AM in Col J L Davenport's home by Rev J H Babcock assisted by relatives and friends. A wedding breakfast followed, with gifts. The couple plans to reside in Mitchell after a trip to Chicago.
Capt Alberti spoke to a capacity Eastern Star audience Thursday about his Russia and Siberia experiences. He shared prison tales and vivid scenes from Russian cities while noting America’s freedoms and urging study of foreign lands to better understand the United States.
