A large Mitchell crowd observed Decoration Day with a morning procession to Omaha depot and cemeteries listing graves of soldiers from many regiments. The afternoon program at the opera house featured Hon. C. H. Dillon of Yankton with veterans and Relief Corps in attendance.
Mr Dillon’s speech drew strong attention from start to finish and earned hearty congratulations from friends. He praised war defenders and today’s volunteers, calling for loyalty to the country. The event was orderly and well received with banks and many businesses closed for the opera house exercises.
Memorial Sunday services were held at the Grand opera house with the 3rd Army and the W R C leading a patriotic program. Commander Mc Lain directed the exercises as Rev A C Stevens delivered the devotional and Rev B W Burlingh gave a sermon on duty and the war against sin. Music by Mrs Hitchcock and others accompanied the service. America was sung and a benediction by Rev Stevens closed the gathering.
Mitchell hosts a South Dakota Business Men’s Association conference as D L McKinney outlines plans to advertise the state for Omaha exposition. The university team edges the Indians 13 to 11 after a late rally. Jimmie Rogan and Earl Brown umpire. Crow Creek 17 University 13 in a nine inning match.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. T. J. Spangler were held at the residence of Sydney W. Smith at 3 oclock. Members of the Eastern Star chapter Masonic lodge and city council attended in full. Rev J H Babcock presided with music by Mrs S H Scallin and others. The cortege proceeded to Graceland cemetery for burial with Eastern Star rituals at the grave.
A Brookings meeting of the state prohibitionists nominated a state ticket led by Knute Lewis of Lake Preston and F. J. Carlisle of Brookings. Delegates reported harmony and a plan to begin work. The first regiment departed Sioux Falls Sunday in three sections by the Omaha road en route to the Pacific coast.
Crow Creek Indian club draws a crowd at the Mitchell athletic park for a baseball game against the University team. Crow Creek players include Ear pitcher J Sam catcher Eagle Banks Ross Day Badger T Saul Bear Geart, while Universityers list Rogan pitcher Robinson catcher Kingsbury Wells Larson Hoy Potter Tanzy Tucker. The Indians appeared powerful at bat as the contest opened.
A recruiting station opened by L E Whitcher and D C Burnside under President McKinley s second call for 75000 volunteers drew enthusiastic crowds. About 40 to 50 men signed the roll as speeches by Gen Geo A Silsby and Whitcher stirred the crowd. The effort aims to mobilize a full company in Mitchell s area and push for mobilization of the second regiment in the city.
