Austro German troops recaptured Lemberg and nearly all Galicia from Russia after a major offensive. Russians suffered hundreds of thousands killed or missing as Berlin reports heavy French and German shelling and rapid progress through Przemyśl and Grodek.
Petrograd reports a major victory after a multi day river battle south of Lemberg. Russian forces claim gains at Rawa Ruska, 32 miles northwest of Lemberg near Bukowina. Italian reports say reinforcements arrive on the Tsonzo front north of Triest and repelled by Alpine troops in Monte Nero. Unofficial Geneva dispatch claims Italians captured Malborgeth positions and bombard the fortress. Five Swedish steamers bound for England, including Tunisiania torpedoed off Lowestoft by a German submarine. crew saved.
The Handelsblad says Washington hinted to London that sending Japanese expeditionary forces to Europe would be undesirable. A Japanese force reportedly landed in Manchuria for a possible departure, but Britain told Tokyo under American pressure to refrain from further dispatch to Europe.
