Dakota University Orator Colton Receives Grand Homecoming

Ethan Colton, victor in the intercollegiate oratorical contest at Brookings, returns to Mitchell as the city and university warmly honor him. A blue and white carriage, 25 students, a silver cup, and speeches by local leaders mark a festive, if rain-shortened, celebration. Colton emphasizes unity of city and university as he accepts the tribute.

State athletic meets to be held in Mitchell

The state athletic association will meet in Mitchell due to its central location and local support. This favorable location is expected to secure Mitchell as the permanent home for the association and for the forthcoming oratorical meet next year. Dakota University is praised for its influence and standing statewide.

Pleasant Windle Home Afternoon Reception Attended by Many

A Saturday afternoon reception at Mrs. S Windle's corner Sanborn and Sixth street drew a large group of lady guests. Mrs S H Scallin and Mrs Windle hosted with Mrs M J Roberts and Mrs Anna Scallin assisting. American flags, lilac mantel decor, and refreshments of coffee wafers ice cream and cake highlighted the event.

Ethan's New Creamery Beats Expectations in Rural Drive

B L Keene reports from Ethan that a new creamery started a week ago with a 10 mile distant skimming station in Hutchinson county. On its first day farmers hauled 3000 pounds of milk though cans were scarce. The steam powered plant includes a 24 by 40 foot creamery and a 20 by 30 engine room with a 100 foot well supplying soft water for butter washing. The venture draws strong farmer support and is described as a larger success than promoters expected.

Old Soldiers Indignant Over Flagstaff Incident

G A R members raised a flagstaff at their hall to fly the Stars and Stripes. Saturday morning the Spanish flag appeared on the staff. Luke Richards found it and removed it. The veterans vow to pursue those responsible, deeming the act an insult to themselves and to their country.

Damages Awarded in City Liquor Case and Assault Verdicts

The report covers multiple cases. Mrs. Sandidge won $25 actual damages against Fred Widmann for selling liquor to her husband. Mrs. Sandidge’s attorneys indicated the case may appeal to test the law. Hanson was convicted of assault and battery, receiving 30 days in jail and a $100 fine with potential extension for nonpayment.

Jury awards Colwell $800 in city damage case

The jury in the Colwell versus Mitchell city case returned a verdict for Colwell awarding $800 damages after deliberations that began with nine in favor and three against. The defense filed for a 60 day stay and possible new trial, citing disappointment at the lower damages.

Mitchell Men Pass Militia Exam and Enlist

Seventeen Mitchell youths traveled to Sioux Falls for militia exams. Sixteen passed and joined companies in Huron and Sioux Falls, with one in the cavalry. The town boasts the record and looks to Co. 6’s movements, while Frank McLain will send occasional letters from the theaters of California and the Philippines. Citizens wish the volunteers good luck.
