Vaclav Novak, a pioneer resident of Tyndall South Dakota, killed himself by lowering into a 23 foot deep, 23 inch diameter well after a quarrel and heavy drinking. The body was found after 24 hours when a rock used in the search struck the obstruction and personnel recovered the body from the well.
Hon. Herman Watkes former South Dakota legislator sells his Avon area farm adjoining Avon to Arkansans for 70 dollars per acre. The dry Bon Homme County area once traded at two to six dollars. The Walkes plan to move to Arkansas as Avon enacts stringent pool room rules to curb bootlegging.
In Sioux Falls a filing in U S court cancels homestead entries tied to the United States v Ella Henry and Carl Pitan and United States v Emma M Pretzer and Carl Pitan. The case stems from the land fraud affair linked to rancher Carl Pitan of Lyman County. Pitan, a known cattleman, was sentenced to one year in Stanley County jail. both homesteads lie near his ranch in Lyman County.
Aberdeen South Dakota July Evarts once hosted America’s largest cattle market and Indian trading post as the Milwaukee line abandoned the town for a coast extension. Workers move houses to new towns as tracks will be torn up by August 1 leaving only memories of a bustling frontier center.
A delegation from Flandreau reports the Ancient Order of Hibernians meeting in Indianapolis approved a $100,000 memorial church for Father Quick, the confessor of Irish prisoners executed in the Manchester rescue. Plans to raise funds and begin construction will be set soon, with strong Irish support guiding the project.
Vermillion South Dakota July 30 Fred Wilblad a stone mason employed by Eric Nylen had a scaffold accident Monday morning while setting a large stone for the law building pillars. A ladder fell striking his shoulder causing a fall but he quickly recovered and resumed work.
By laying a telephone line from Scotland to Vodnany the local exchange gains links to nine rural lines expanding direct communication between farmers across a wide country and business men of Scotland.
New York July 30 Thirty six men were indicted by Kings county grand jury on charges of violating anti gambling laws at race tracks. The list includes prominent men who formerly sat in betting rings.
Secretary of the Interior James R. Garfield arrived by special train in Belle Fourche South Dakota and visited the large irrigation project 12 miles north. He praised progress that will open 90 000 acres of public land in Butte County for settlement and water use. Garfield noted the government completes parts left unfinished by a failed contractor and is doing the work more cheaply with a Wisconsin firm handling most duties. He received a warm local welcome before departing for Deadwood and then Cody Wyoming.
Laure, South Dakota July 29. C L Johnson of Sully County proves popcorn can be highly profitable. He holds 700 bushels from last year, plants 25 acres this year, harvests 35 to 40 bushels per acre, and sells at three cents a pound. He uses a harvester and threshing machine for feed and sale, earning about seventy to eighty dollars per acre, a record rivaled only by potatoes.
Philip, S. D., July 29. Rain has kept grass green and stock fat but soft, delaying shipment of range and grass fed cattle. Despite high prices, many stockmen will postpone selling until later in the season while homesteaders enter the grazing business.
A severe hail storm in Drakota township spurs a proposed plan for a state controlled hail insurance to cover up to 50 percent of crops. Kingsbury county officials and local growers push the idea, suggesting funding and premium collection via county authorities as a safeguard against annual state losses.

Tegucigalpa July 29 reports say government forces occupy Choluceca, which revolutionists had captured earlier. Observers believe the movement has been quelled and the republic is now tranquil.
Sioux Falls July 29 South Dakota voters will choose on two constitutional amendments and four law changes at the November general election. Key items include the county option liquor law, a new divorce law raising residence to one year, a Sunday closing law, quail shooting regulation, and salary changes for the attorney general. Also proposed is a major rewrite of state revenue law removing levy limits and leaving tax levels to the state assessment board.
Worthing July 29. In high water large pickerel and a giant carp moved up a drainage canal in Grant township. Henry Hanson, a farmer, lost a young calf dragged to deep water by the carp while he waded through water to save it. Melvin Sundvoid relays Hanson’s account of the event.
Deadwood South Dakota July 29 Governor Crawford has ordered a pardon for Ervin M Hilton of this city sentenced for stealing precipitates from the Golden Reward Mining company He will be freed on August 4 after four months of a one year penitentiary term.
A cloud burst drenched Arlington South Dakota on July 29 delivering over five inches of rain in minutes. Crops damaged with barley harvest disrupted as grain lay flat and soil washed away. Rivers trởent and roads impassable with stock losses and bridges washed out.
Alfred F. Anderson of Dalesburg SD threshed 40 acres to yield over 1300 bushels of winter wheat valued at about 1 dollar per bushel. This year gross receipts reach roughly 32.50 dollars per acre versus 22.50 last year, with cultivation and threshing costs under 6 dollars per acre. Anderson has abandoned spring wheat, noting the crop’s profitability and land value implications.
The late J. M Greene a South Dakota Republican committeeman bequeaths 5000 to Brule County for relief of needy widows orphans and indigent residents. Trustees are the three Masonic lodge officers. W C Carpenter resigns after a record career with the Milwaukee Railway at Marion Junction, age 61. He began telegraphy in 1865 66, served at Adams Minn La Crescent Ripon and Marion Junction, where he stayed since 1879. He is father to four, with two sons in rail work and one killed in service. Mrs Carpenter runs Leslie house. J A Steninger becomes longest serving agent at Parker.
Miller, S. D., July 28. A 6 year old girl boarded a Milwaukee and St. Paul passenger train with her mother and, after a heat wave chase, forced the railroad to stop and allow her ice cream. Interstate Commerce Commission records note the line earned $2.60 per train mile, making the Cone expense total $18.20. The mother and conductor agree the outcome was worthwhile.
Huron South Dakota July 28 1909 the allotment of lands on the Standing Rock reservation is nearly complete by United States Allotting Agent Gunderson. All children born in the past year have not yet received allotments and small timber allotments await cooler weather. A three person commission will appraise surplus land with six months’ work. if they start in spring opening will likely occur about October 1 1909.
Ernest B. Randall will waive examination and be bound over to the next term of circuit court for the murder of Frank Bright, assistant postmaster at Imlay. The motive is believed to be a rivalry for Miss Winifred Barton who once lived with Bright.
A "Jack the Peeper" has appeared in Scotland South Dakota prompting resident alarm. He has been seen peering into windows at several locations but has thus far evaded capture. Wade a local resident chased him after a sighting but the intruder fled quickly and escaped.
Kadoka South Dakota July 27 detectives report ongoing thefts of Milwaukee Railroad property worth about 15000 dollars from Kadoka stations over the past year. George Rumsey and three sons were found guilty for stealing barb wire and other building materials and fined with suspended sentences in return for restitution. Depredations continue prompting tougher measures to bring offenders to justice.
In Spearfish, South Dakota, a group including Tates Eccles McMaster Barr Wilkinson and Gay, mostly Belle Fourche residents, reached the summit of Devil's Tower for the first time in 15 years. The 1200 foot tower had remained unclimbed since 1893 when William Rogers scaled it and built a dangerous peg ladder later removed. The ascent used fixed pegs drilled into the rock.
A proposed $300 million lumber merger by 25 leading lumbermen, including Frederick E. Weyerhauser and Edward Hines, has collapsed. J. B. White and J. A. Freeman cite inability of lumbermen and foresters to unite as the reason, despite earlier committee efforts in St. Louis and discussions at the Beach hotel. The government previously warned of anti trust issues but showed interest in timber conservation.
A severe electric storm at the Pennsylvania National Guard encampment near Gettysburg, July 27, killed at least six troopers and injured about forty, with Milton Garner of the Tenth Regiment among the dead and others from the Tenth seriously hurt. Governor Stuart’s tent collapsed but spared him and others nearby. The camp is flooded and telegraph service is hindered.
A fierce hail storm near Canistota South Dakota at 6 pm Monday wrecked farmlands in McCook County. It battered crops across many localities, with an estimated 6 000 acres destroyed and thousands more damaged along a zigzag southeast track.
Bonesteel Nebraska July 24 Last night a telegram from Newport Nebraska told Sheriff McMullen that Harry Hazzard who broke jail at Fairfax last week was in Newport in custody and refused to leave the state without requisition. Requisition granted Deputy Morrisey leaves for Newport today. Hazzard originally stole a team of horses in Tripp County about July 5 and sold them at Carlock. He escaped by prying the jail door lock and now faces jail breaking charges along with horse stealing. He previously lived in Newport where his parents reside.
The semi annual meeting is in Rapid City under State Superintendent Astrud. Acting secretary is Mrs. Stella Kolb of Vermillion. Speakers include C. E. Swanson deputy state superintendent C. K E Holmes of Sioux Falls A. H. Sey mour of Kingsbury French of Elk Point and Gerald of Hand county.
Weekly weather bulletin for July 20 1908 reports fair conditions with abundant sunshine and minimal precipitation across most of the state. Rain fell Thursday night and Friday morning with four inches in McCook and Turner counties, while western areas saw slightly above normal heat and some nights cool.
In Armour South Dakota a mad dog scare led to injuries when a dray boy Earl Davis aged about 13 was bitten on the right thigh. A bystander fired a double barreled gun which misfired and discharged injuring Ray Brown who was nearby in the right thigh and arm. The dog was killed.
A severe hail storm north of Yankton South Dakota on Monday night caused extensive damage to crops including oats and corn. The state hospital garden supplying meals for 600 patients was wiped out and many windows broken. Local residents and vendors like H Dunham Chris and Theodore Anderson Gray Brothers Wm. Box and Gurney Seed company reported losses.
