Letcher South Dakota August 6 Farmers George Brandt paid 360 dollars and a 50 dollar guarantee for a fake farm deed. He met two strangers at Artesian during a Campbell Bros circus visit who posed as local farmers and fled after the show.
Two young men from St. Louis were caught in the act of robbing the S. 12. Stroble hardware store in Canova at about 2 am. They resisted surrender and fired on bystanders, wounding one suspect. both were captured by Sheriff Ed Clark and Deputy Jas. Duffy and jailed. Authorities fear a bank robbery attempt, citing a past Canova bank heist nearby.
A heavy wind and rain swept Hudson South Dakota last night uprooting the Milwaukee Railroad wind mill, pulling up stay posts and demolishing the mill and frame. Many windows were broken around town.
Rapid City dispatch reports Tony Evanoff 36 a section foreman on the Crouch lines was fatally struck by an east bound locomotive while on a handcar near McGee station. The incident occurred this morning as he traveled west on the track.
In Wagner South Dakota on August 6 John O Connor and James Williams, both Sioux, fought over wife number seven. O Connor grabbed a broom stick and nearly scalped Williams in a one round melee. Williams survived. O Connor was fined ten dollars and costs and jailed.
Avon South Dakota. August 6. The contract for the construction of a sewerage system has been awarded. Materials have been ordered and construction will begin as soon as they arrive.
United States Senator Thomas S. Martin, attending the Albemarle horse show in Charlotteville Virginia, narrowly escaped when the stallion On Guard charged the gate. Martin grabbed the bridle and pinned the horse down, avoiding injury from being knocked down.
In Yankton, a circuit court ruled a Menno Lumber contract allowing a 5 percent add on bills was invalid. The decision found no consideration and said the clause forced lower bids, violated public policy and aimed to create a monopoly, invalidating the claim for damages.
DeSmet South Dakota August 5 Word is received here announcing the death of Hon Thomas H Ruth at Battle Creek Michigan where he had gone for treatment He was 64 years old and had served the state two terms as commissioner of school and public lands before recently retiring as president of the First National Bank here He supervised the selection of large tracts of school lands during his administration
Carthage D. Aug The movement to organize a farmers elevator company at Carthage has met strong support. The company is incorporated with a 10000 capital and over half stock sold in 10 days. Directors include M E Harmen president C E F Barkl secretary James Sneesby A C Johnson S L Torgerson. A bid call for a new elevator building will be issued, to be completed within 90 days for this fall's market.
Milbank South Dakota August 5 The Milbank Anti Treating society forms as townspeople draft a constitution and bylaws Twenty drinkers sign a pledge not to drink in saloons unless paying for it themselves and not to treat others Each member pays ten cents for a card bearing the promise and witnesses signatures Violations incur a one dollar forfeit to the society treasurer The group expects at least 100 members and aims to curb the liquor trade.
George Taylor of Flandreau Indian Tribe met with Senator Kittredge at Flandreau to press for full payment of 8000 dollars claimed from the government. Since the 1868 treaty with the Santee Indians payments have come but allegedly short each year, and the matter was sent to the secretary of the interior over a year ago with no action.
Pierre Aug. 5 Governor Crawford named Robert Heinricks of Sturgis as the fish and game warden for Meade county.
Bon Homme county commissioners approve submitting at the November 3 general election a proposition to issue bonds totaling 75000 for the construction of a county court house and jail building.

Elk Point South Dakota August 5 A local butcher Ed J Johnson lies in critical condition with a bullet lodged near his back after a party of pleasure seekers used rifles near Richland dam Sixteen year old Jay Wilmarth was wounded in the shoulder from the same target shooting The shooters were women and girls from the city and face investigation and possible responsibility for the injuries
In Aberdeen an early morning freight string crushed switchman K. W. Bannon as his body was dragged along the track. Near Groton roadmaster L. Islickner was killed when a gravel car swung and pinned his head, while section foreman Chris Olson was badly hurt. Bannon leaves a wife and two children, Klickner a wife and one child.
Rapid City South Dakota reports July saw about 5 060 visitors registered or housed in hotels and rooming houses. Merchants forecast strong fall business as transients included many land seekers. The Lemmon land office expansion extends 40 miles north boosting settlement prospects. The office records breaking activity due to changed residence rules increasing homesteading filings.
H Schilling of Sioux City closed a deal for 800 head of fat cattle owned by George Porch on White river. The cattle net about 25000 and will be driven to Cody 70 miles south for shipment.
The Burke Gazette sold to F L Bollen of Bonesteel who took possession Saturday. The former operator was W F Kinney and previously principal of the Bonesteel schools.
In Deadwood South Dakota on August 4 women of the town saved Geo Corey a drunkard from lynching for beating his wife. He was horsewhipped by about a dozen men and stoned from the community bearing a placard Terry guarantees safety to women. Corey fled toward the mountains as townsfolk raised a purse for Mrs Corey and her daughter.
Four hundred Ute Indians, escorted by Captain Johnson and about a dozen Fourth Cavalry troopers from Fort Meade, rest at Hot Springs after camping near town. They plan a three month journey back to Utah with ponies wagons and gear. One 44 year old Ute dies after allegedly ingesting poison.
A Reedfield item reports a belt crafted from a rattlesnake that killed a woman. The skin was tanned oiled lined with silk and buckled by two sisters on a claim near Presho. Belts like this typically sell for five dollars, but this one carries a storied history.
Pierre S D Aug 4 Both railroad mileage and terminals have been raised materially by the state board of assessment which has completed its work here The valuation of the terminals in this city was raised from 980000 to 180000 Express and telegraph companies also came in for a boost in some cases reaching 40 per cent The smaller telephone companies were left alone but such corporations as the Dakota Central were materially advanced.
Tony Borobusky, a Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad employee, was struck by two handecars while traveling to a work train between Canton and Worthing. He fell from the head car and was crushed, suffering severe head and spine injuries and paralysis.
In Yankton South Dakota on August 4 the Little Panama drainage ditch progresses, with eight months remaining to complete the estimated 140000 cost, to be paid by beneficiaries along the ditch. The county board and officers toured the site and praised contractor handling as shovels rise twice a minute. opposition has eased with work moving rapidly. Also Fritz Nyberg, auto dealer, was fined five dollars and costs for violating state auto laws, in the county’s first such case, likely to be appealed.
Siox Falls reports very little wheat grown in Minnehaha County with total output not exceeding 100000 bushels. Oats and barley are set to rise about 25 percent from last year while corn could reach double last year’s yield. Barley averages near 25 bushels per acre for about 2225000 bushels countywide. oats at 30 to 35 would total 2400000 bushels. Five large barley buyers including Joseph H. French of Chicago O J Ruh H D Graff G W Hales of Chicago and R W Templeton of Milwaukee visit the county. barley quality noted as fine.
Sioux Falls reports about 1,200 grain houses prepared to operate in the state as licenses approach approval by the railroad commission.

Bonesteel S D August 3 Mrs Frank Pinkham attempted to murder her two children and herself this morning She asked all in the room to leave except her brother then tore out a tracheotomy tube and tried to swallow a spool of thread The 14 month old baby was operated on but the windpipe was severed and likely fatal Her husband Mr Pinkham woke to save the remaining child The woman is said to be insane.
S. D. Herrick August 3 Bessie Sinkular was arrested by Sheriff McMullen for the July 10 blaze that destroyed her millinery store and most of a block. Investigators allege she knew the fire origin and insurance paid claims are halted pending investigation. Her hearing is planned at Bonesteel this week.
Spearfish South Dakota plans reveal a proposed six thousand horsepower hydroelectric plant on the Spearfish River with a two million dollar price tag. The move pits General Electric against Black Hills Traction, with Homestake aiding to secure riparian rights amid five surveying crews in the canyon.

Watertown New York August 3 Frank Moran street commissioner was assaulted on Main Street by itinerant barber C P Rand. Moran received three blows with a weapon, requiring 16 stitches to face and neck. Rand fled and was not yet captured as police spread alerts for hundreds of miles. A prior reprimand allegedly sparked the attack.
Rex Beach the novelist has returned from Alaska and is hospitalized in Seattle with a serious eye ailment. An eye specialist fears permanent loss of sight due to exposure while bear hunting in the Copper River country.
