A catalog-style sale lists various groceries and household items with discounted prices. Coffee, starches, baking powders, canned goods, tea, tobacco, and apparel items are promoted with reduced rates. Several lines promise percent-off sales on clothing, shoes, dry goods, waists, hats, caps, carpets, and curtains.
A long separated couple, Cal J. M. Adams and Mrs. A. L. Adams, renewed vows at the home of E. B. VanAlstine in Mitchell on Saturday at 8:30 pm. Adams, a native of Prince Edward Island, previously married to Mrs. Adams in 1862 before a 24 year separation, returned to Wisconsin and remarried his former wife after decades apart. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A. C. Stevens in the presence of relatives, with plans to establish a home and live out their later years together. Col. Adams’s office noted the wedding as a hopeful reconciliation following years of estrangement.
Rev Durant preached at St Marys church in response to the presidents proclamation praising national unity and the war with Spain. The sermon argued war motive from Christian principles, read the proclamation reverently, and the service closed with the national hymn and a Red Cross collection.
The Mitch ell Business Men's League met Saturday at the G A R hall to organize and plan support for the Republican state convention and city electric light plant decision. A three member financial committee and a five member arrangements committee were named with Branson added to the executive group. A motion to purchase the plant at 4500 was discussed amid broad interest. Photos of county farming interests will be sent to the Omaha exposition. The next meeting will adopt by laws.
Two men were arrested after breaking into a farm house near Ethan, authorities reported. The suspects were detained following a night-time intrusion investigation and are facing preliminary charges. Investigators recovered stolen items and are reviewing nearby sightings for leads.
G C Duffy of Ripon Wisconsin visited the city seeking to induce purchase of the electric light plant. He offered 5500 dollars including the franchise with 12 year lease. The city committee did not agree to buy at that price. Regardless, Duffy said the plant would be rebuilt and franchise valuable. He plans further talks in St Paul with a partner offering 3500 to run the plant. Work to rebuild hoped to begin soon.
Geo C Duffy moves to rebuild the electric light plant after council decision. He buys the old Standard Oil warehouse for conversion, plans to reuse engine and boilers, and expects to complete repairs in five weeks ahead of the Republican state convention. Dynamos will be purchased to power the plant.
Two men identified as Martin Johnson and Fred Kneip were arrested Monday afternoon in Ethan after breaking into the Albert J. Hilberg farmhouse while the family attended a funeral. Neighbors spotted them as they left the scene.
Half a mile away a group fled to town with Justice Cool. Prisoners were escorted to a guarded warehouse along the railroad, then taken to Mitchell where Sheriff Cook imprisoned them. They appeared before Justice McKinley with defense by W W Helwig and F H Winsor for the state, held to circuit court on $500 bonds.
Ray Colwell of Alexandria sued the city for 1500 after a September accident left him injured. A jury awarded about 950 with costs, but a Saturday compromise settled the claim for 789 in full. Attorneys Zollman Colwell and Goodykoontz facilitated the agreement.
Col J M Adams reports from Washington that the secretary of the interior has reversed the 1895 commissioner ruling and sustained the local office in the land contest Palmer versus Hooper. The dispute, tied to White Lake townsite, drew many interested men and stretched since 1891, with much attention in land circles. Palmer now receives the land as decided.
F B Elie has begun work on a new telephone system in ear nest. Poles arrived via the Omaha road and on Saturday he distributed them to planned wiring points. Erie has secured many subscribers from businessmen and residents, hinting at strong early uptake.
