Sheriff Cook Uses Gun on Alleged Thug in Mitchell
Five tramps arrested after a sequence of assault and disorderly conduct in Mitchell. Sheriff Cook fired a 22 caliber pistol at Thomas Bailey during arrest, wounding him slightly, then jailed Bailey and four companions. Bailiffs later rounded up the group, with sentences ranging from 10 to 30 days. Public celebration of a national holiday follows with outings to parks and groves and a community ice cream and fireworks display.

A soldier letter from Camp Merritt California dated June 25 1898 describes sickness in the regiment measles and diphtheria spreading and redeployments to the Philippines with many in the hospital corps. Uncle Jake Conant Dies After Long Illness
Jacob F. Conant aged about 67 died at The Raymond in Mitchell after a gastric cancer battle lasting weeks He was born in Onondaga County New York in 1831 and lived in Wisconsin before moving to Mitchell He leaves a wife six daughters and two sons Funeral services were held at Holy Family Church conducted by Rev Father Hogan with many floral tributes.
