A Sioux City A I U leader denounces foreign-born workers blamed for Chicago violence and calls for immigration limits. Editorials from St Paul, Minneapolis, and St Louis criticize Debs, Pullman, and the strike for provoking unrest and harming labor.
Bartholomew Shea, found guilty of killing Robert Ross on municipal election day, has been condemned to death by electricity to be carried out within the week ending August 21. The report also notes warnings from United States consuls in Mexico advising Americans against emigrating with insufficient means or information about livelihoods.
Ohio Blaze, July 11 reports Ellis Wilson’s restaurant burning with damage totaling 200000 after flames spread rapidly to Um stead’s hardware Alexander’s drug Horner’s meat market Gillar’s and Carr’s jewelry Conkle’s bakery and the Gazette office. Earthquakes in Constantinople also reported with fear and fleeing residents.
Ex-President Benjamin Harrison rejects a reported remark about President Cleveland sending federal troops into a state without a governor's request. He says he did not say that and asserts the president may deploy troops to enforce laws where civil officers fail, with proclamations possibly required before use.
Strikes and blockades persist across multiple cities. In St Paul the day passes without incident as rail lines slowly recover. Chicago remains the focal point with hopes of ending rioting as blockades ease and throughput improves.
The Knights of Labor announced a nationwide strike covering all members from Omaha to the Pacific coast. General Master Workman Sovereign stated that any orders would be issued by M Corwin of Denver, with Debs signaling possible citywide action.
Intense excitement surrounds the Sacramento and Oakland strike after state troops failed to clear depots and yards. Reported moves include U S marshals declaring martial law and dispatching regulars, with troops possibly coming from the Presidio and General Ruger expected to go to the state capital.
In St Paul on July 6 rail traffic shows improvement with most passenger trains on time and some freight moving. Duluth sees little change with limited NP service and scarce vegetables and meat.
Unanimous chamber of commerce resolution endorsed Senator Davis for re election, praising his stance. Washington report notes House committees nearing session end with few key items left. Major issues include Pacific railroad, banking bill, naval armor plate probe, labor arbitration laws, immigration changes, and the McGuire merchant marine bill.
In Washington on July 11 Senator Peffer objected to delaying his omnibus populist resolution on the post office appropriation bill. Senator Davis of Minnesota rebuked lawlessness and strikes hindering train movement. Separate items note A R U strike order on Wheeling and Lake Erie, warrants for 700 railroad workers, averted strike for 500 longshoremen, and Loren Fletcher renominated in Minneapolis.
The first break in the freight blockade appears as Trainmaster Phillips runs a cattle and meat train through Daytons bluff yards to the West Side. Burlington yards also begin moving livestock and freight, with passenger trains largely on schedule. Mail service continues via Soo at Carrinetoy.
