Thirty five boys fled the state reform school at Plankinton when Col Ainsworth retired and W H Tompkins took over. The new manager faced a mass departure as the boys fled across the prairie prompting a posse pursuit with shots fired before the group was rounded up and returned to the institution. Local excitement rose over the first outside intervention in the school's history and potential future complications. Also listing stock pastured near Firesteel with 14 miles from town.
