Enormous Shipments From Range Country Highlight 1903 Trade
Pierre, S. D., Feb. 11. The Chamberlain live stock shipments of 1903 show a strong range country despite a weak market and harsh winter. Since 1898 the area sent 3,321 cars and received 1,804, with 678 cattle and 18 hogs cars from Chamberlain in 1903. Many small ranchers mortgaged their holdings in 1900 01 and were wiped out by banks and traders, while conservatives endure and expect future growth. Weather aided stockmen as railroads anticipate heavier feeder shipments to the range.

A Staggering Blow at Port Arthur
London naval men view Japan s first torpedo boat strike on the Russian fleet off Port Arthur as decisive though not unexpected. They note references to mines likely mean torpedoes and say Russian ships were hit. Whitehead torpedoes probably sank or lie in harbor mud, leaving them out of action for a long period.
