The Davison County Teachers Association concluded its winter gathering last Friday and Saturday. Friday evening A.8. Hitchcock delivered an address to teachers on the "Motive Force of Character".
The Davison Coury Pedagogues held the opening session Friday in the courthouse with a concert by local talent. W A Barber presided as master of ceremonies and introduced the D A quartet. A E Hitchcock read a paper on the motive force of character outlining five elements including responsibility faith loyalty self reliance and thoroughness in work. The program featured several recitations and musical numbers by local students and performers.
The Saturday session led by President Quigley emphasized teachers meetings as essential for inspiration and unity among University city and county schools. Papers covered geography arithmetic history and social relations of teachers, urging objective teaching, reasoning, sociability, and a well ordered classroom. A new county constitution created three sections with two general meetings. officers W A Barber as president and Edith Earl as secretary were elected.
Monday evening at the council meeting Aldermen Gracy Levinger Pollard McDougall Indra and Bracy with Mayor Seaman attended as bids for edgings and oak plank were opened. The city awarded crosswalk oak plank to J M Levake Lumber Co and Lone contract to Davis Daniels for the same. Two ordinances passed fixing the city attorney salary at 200 annually and limiting heavy wagons to wooden crossings. Police judge Abby reported three vagrancy cases continued. Auditing approved bills including Standard Oil Co Wells Fargo? etc. The water works well was found clogged and will be cleaned with drilling outfit. The Catholic Church Snow Fazaar raised over 400. The overcoat theft by John Zebart was settled by paying all costs.
A large crowd attended the Snow Bazaar closing Friday night with prize drawings including W. J. Healey winning china dishes and Eugene Foley’s daughter taking a piano lamp. Prizes sold at auction brought good prices amid dancing and church fundraising noted as a clear gain for the Catholic church.
John Zebart posed as the son of a farmer near Mt Vernon to obtain a fur overcoat worth 27 dollars from Mt Vernon Merchandise Co. Mark Betts, the store manager, traced him to Eureka where Sheriff Cook arrested him. Zebart was to be tried Monday, but a settlement was reached before court. His father helped him, and the state opposed any settlement as Zebart faced his first offense.
Mr Mohr agreed to free the prisoner if all costs were paid, Zebart senior agreeing. It cost $150 to steer his son from crime to reform. They returned home Monday afternoon.
