James P. Nelson of Walsh township died after a lightning strike while at work with a team. His two sons were shocked but survived. Nelson died about thirty minutes later. He leaves a wife and eight children.
Deadwood South Dakota August 22 1907 members of the Black Hills Mining Men association condemned a state raise in mining property assessments. A committee will draft protest resolutions and two representatives R S Grimshaw and Chambers Kellar plus another member will travel to Pierre to present the miners views to the state board of equalization. The group argues the hike harms developing properties and many paying mines would fail operate.
Demiwood South Dakota August 22 Dr Rogers a renowned early physician died at St Josephs hospital He was found unconscious in a Broadway alley by the chief of police and died at noon despite medical efforts Rogers arrived in the Black Hills in 1878 and spent many years as a prominent practitioner Born in Kentucky sixty seven years ago he later lived in the South for much of his life
Major J H Sigimes turned over Buehecker to Brown County authorities on Friday and he remains jailed awaiting the fall term circuit court for threatening his son's life. He had been released Thursday after a prior drunkenness arrest.
Huntington West Virginia August 21 William Elis was captured near Logan by a posse including his father and is held on a murder charge for shooting deputy sheriff Robert Murphy who was bringing a prisoner from Virginia Elis says he mistook Murphy and his party for others with whom he had previous trouble
Grand Forks North Dakota August 24 Edward Fallon an aging Great Northern employee lies dying in Deaconess hospital after a fall left him paralyzed from the waist down. In his final hours he remarried the woman he wed more than fifty years ago and who was divorced from him a year earlier, witnessed by their two grown children and hospital staff.
A severe wind storm struck farms six to seven miles south of Ethan SD, blowing down the McLean home and barn and destroying several stacks by lightning. Here, rain fell, promising to benefit the corn crop in good condition.
G W Rosencrans, longtime miller at Bridgewater and Mitchell, plans a large flour mill in Canton with up to date machinery and elevators. The plant will produce 100 barrels of flour daily and aims to start operations by November 1.
In Rapid City South Dakota on August 24 a two year old boy died after poisoning from eating canned beans during a berrying trip. The child was the son of Mrs. Wryrick of Rapid City. He grew sick over several days despite doctors efforts. No other family members who ate the beans were affected.
Canton SD rejoices as Milwaukee system adds a new schedule. Trains run Sioux Falls to Sioux City through Canton at 8 05 am and 7 35 pm, with another Sioux Falls to Mitchell pass Canton at 9 15 am and 7 35 pm. A Sanborn connection arrives to link both routes, and the evening Tribune is delivered much earlier.
Sioux Falls South Dakota August 23 The Minnehaha County Sunday School association reports the most successful convention with 28 schools represented and 471 teachers and officers and 38246 pupils listed in reports. The next annual meeting will be in Valley Springs with Rev Frank Fox D D as president and J J Allen as vice president and Mrs F P Leach as secretary.
New York police report three deadly explosive devices sent by mail in four days. Precinct Captain Miles O Reilly received a cigar box packed with guncotton and nails, meant to ignite and kill. Earlier parcels were addressed to banker Jacob H Schiff and M Guggenheim Sons.
A Storm Lake man posing as an optician with a young woman as his wife sparked a Canton South Dakota scandal. A visiting wife accused him of infidelity, confronted him, and the pair fled the city together to an unnamed destination after the woman from Storm Lake learned of the betrayal.
Hot Springs South Dakota hosts the eighteenth annual reunion of the Black Hills Soldiers and Sailors association alongside the South Dakota railroad commissioners meeting. He visits fellow inmates, gives them a shortcake and silver dollars, and asks to stay with friends but is denied. He is later arrested on a drunk charge and rejoined his jailmates until trial.
A special car of the bureau of fish commission arrives in Sioux Falls to plant 11 000 common bass 1 000 smallmouth bass 2 000 rock bass and 1 000 catfish across eastern South Dakota. Headwaters of the Sioux at Watertown receive many fish before the vehicle moves to Huron for central stocking. Mitchell reports Aug 21 lists three tramps later captured in Wolsey with guns knives and watches worth about 100 dollars from Travis Bros. store. One thief is a 19 year old.
Farmers report threshing across the Mitchell region shows varied yields. Henry Sphris near Mitchell produced 17 bushels per acre from 35 acres of rye wheat. Louis Ellsworth near Riverside harvested 25 bushels per acre from 32 acres of blue stem wheat. J C Heimel near Mitchell yielded 33 bushels of barley and 35 of early white oats per acre. Lou Carlston near Riverside had 16 bushels from 25 acres of wheat and 45 bushels of oats per acre from 30 acres. Reese Jones near Mitchell produced 20 bushels macaroni wheat per acre on 20 acres. John Harris east of Mitchell yielded 20 bushels per acre from a large wheat field. W A Davis reported 16 to 20 bushels for wheat and 40 to 60 bushels for oats. Overall, farmers and elevator men expect an average around 16 bushels per acre.

A severe wind and rain storm hit Arlington and spread hail between DeSmet and Erwin damaging thousands of acres of crops. A new barn south of Arlington was struck by lightning and burned, grain and hay lost, and binders unable to salvage flattened grain across the area.
Kermitt Roosevelt, second son of the president, will visit Captain Seth Bullock in Deadwood for ten days starting next Sunday. He plans riding, fishing, and sightseeing in the Black Hills, and Bullock looks forward to hosting the young Roosevelt during the August stay in Hot Springs South Dakota.
A morning blaze in Carthage destroys half a block of business property including Satter’s General Store for 1200 dollars and Strand’s for 12000. Opera house 3000, Shields’ Hardware 1000, Typley Building 15000, Young’s Barber Shop, Owen’s Restaurant and Palmer’s Real Estate Office sustain lighter losses. Artesian water supply helps save the town. All properties had insurance.

J G C Nelson, a farmer from the Walshtown district north of Yankton, was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon while in a corn crib. He died thirty-five minutes later. Nelson leaves a wife and eight children and had moved from near Minneapolis five years ago, where his parents and other relatives still live.
The Italian consul Signor Pasquale Corte of Denver and vice consul with notable Italians met Italian colony members in the city during the Christoforo Colombo picnic. They dined at the Smeed hotel and plan to tour Montana Wyoming and Utah before returning to Denver to pursue a labor bureau aiding emigration actions.
Trains from the south and east brought at least 500 excursionists and homeseekers to Huron. Visitors spent the day sightseeing and touring farms in the vicinity, with many remaining while others moved on north and west. It was the largest arrival this season.

Jerauld county normal institute begins next Monday in the high school building for a two week session. Professor J Jones Jr conducts with Professor J E F Wicks and Miss Avis Westcott leading instruction. County Superintendent Wilson expects a large enrollment.
South Dakota farmer wives welcome John Hammer of Turner County adopting a mobile 10 by 30 foot dining car and tents to feed his threshing crew. The plan lets Hammer board and provide meals, reducing burden on wives as the team travels with the threshing operation.
Mrs Hannah Bisby Sage aged 101 years 3 months 27 days died at her son in law John Ervin’s home in Parker Iowa Aug 18 of general debility. Born May 24, 1804 in Orwell Vermont she lived in Wyoming Conneautville Pa Macomb and Woodstock counties Illinois Winneshiek County Iowa and Atchison County Missouri before settling with her sons Almon and Albert in Parker in 1873. She had good health until recently.
RATTLESNAKES NUMEROUS. Pollock South Dakota Aug 18 Rattlesnakes are numerous in the Missouri river region of the northern part of the state. Three rattlers were killed in Pollock in one day and the six year old son of William Taylor thirty miles west of town died after a rattlesnake bite.
Traveling salesmen who visit drug stores formed an auxiliary society to the South Dakota Pharmaceutical association during its Aberdeen meeting. Forty members signed the charter. Officers elected were A. H. Rogers president R. T. Wincott vice president and C. E B. Fagiman secretary.
Avon Illinois reports completion of a new water word system praised as among the best in the state. The project cost about 13000 dollars and relies on an elevated tank atop a 100 foot steel tower. The tank measures 24 feet in diameter and 20 feet high, capacity 2000 barrels, weighing 250 tons when filled.
