Threshing returns from across South Dakota show a large crop, with yields ranging from 14 to 50 bushels per acre. Notable figures include rye up to 18 bushels, barley up to 40, oats near 50, and winter wheat around 34 to 41 bushels per acre, indicating a bumper season.
Harvest is finished and stacking underway in Alexandria. Spring wheat yields average about fifteen bushels per acre with one sample at twenty three. winter wheat is scarce but expected to fare better next season. Barley yields could be the heaviest yet but with poor quality from smut. oats yield fifty to seventy five bushels per acre with fair quality. corn shows strong growth and full average yield anticipated. Weather has been favorable with no rain delays and stacking requires more labor than usual.
The South Dakota state board of equalization adjourned from its first session with plans to hear complaints August 22. Overall state valuation rises modestly, with increases in corporate assessments notably for railroads, telephones, express companies, and the Pullman line. Railroads gain 424,617, telephones 278,015, telegraphs 60,000, express firms 15,000, and Pullman 5,000. Telephone companies increased to 143 from 106.
Owing to heavy rains in recent days Canton South Dakota reports a strong corn crop outlook after prior drought concerns. Small grain yields, especially oats, are high and quality is excellent. They plan to present an important communication to Congressman Martin. war dances draw tourists despite concerns over disease and the reliability of goods they craft.
Pierre South Dakota August 17 The first serious accident in the construction of the government building occurred today when Irrank Canty fell about thirty feet, struck a steel beam, broke his hip and elbow and sustained internal injuries. He is unconscious and in serious condition. His home is listed as somewhere in Massachusetts.
A Saturday afternoon twister in Vermillion within Clay county caused notable damage. Wm Everett's barn collapsed and lumber spread across several acres. Awnings, telephone poles, and wires were damaged. Crop fields and fruit crops suffered, with corn stalks flattened and apples ripped from trees before harvest.
A stranger fell under a moving train near Hartford and lost a hand which was amputated. A sister and relatives in Kansas will fund his transportation there. He is cared for by county authorities while awaiting funds and recovery.
South Dakota railroad commissioners adjourned meeting discussed Bartels Oil case seeking a shift from third to fourth class for small oil consignments. Dr W G Smith to travel to Chicago to urge voluntary reclassification by railroads in South Dakota. Other actions granted elevator sites at Platte and Bonilla and required agents at Bonilla, while denying Dumont station status and rejecting Dumont agent need.
Mrs. James Tifton of Dento Texas dies suddenly while traveling with her three children in the chair car of the Burlington as the train nears Deadwood South Dakota. The family was bound for Palouse Washington to start a new life. The death was unexpected after she had slept during the afternoon and was found unresponsive when one child tried to wake her. The telegraph notified her husband and the body was removed at Crawford.
Drought worsens in Beresford South Dakota with damaged high ground corn while low lands retain moisture. Frost risk looms for late fields as threshing begins yielding 20 to 25 bushels per acre in winter wheat. Spring wheat is fair but light. oats expected to be excellent with large yields reported.
Pierre South Dakota August 14. A wild west river show is nearly ready to launch from here aboard the hull of the old boat Scotty Philip. Captain Senechal Scotty Philip and C P Jordan lead the exhibit with buffalo Sioux and other animals. The barge will be towed by City of Port Pierre and aims for New Orleans this winter then up the Ohio and Mississippi rivers on a two year tour.
Workmen have raised Bedford stone to the second story of Pierre's new federal building in South Dakota. Derricks move large blocks as the east wing will start soon and winter work will begin, with skilled craftsmen on site. The project, delayed by summer preparations, aims to enhance the city’s appearance as streets are graded.
Professors LeClare and Chilcott of the agricultural department report a new wheat disease called yellow berry found in Aberdeens vicinity. It causes yellow spots on the berry, shifts composition from protein to starch, and reduces grain value by about two cents per bushel. The disease is rare in South Dakota but common in Kansas and Nebraska. seed from Devil's Lake, North Dakota shows partial infection, yet seed transmission appears unlikely.

Reports from threshers indicate 17 to 20 bushels per acre for rye and barley. Brule also notes judge Whiting's cattle dipping ruling and four dipping tanks costing $2,500 with about 12,000 cattle dipped twice.
Five inmates Frank G Walters Prda Lawrence Lou Nelson Frank Manley and Fred Kerns escaped Webster County jail by sawing window bars and slipping away in a livery rig secured by a confederate. Two remaining prisoners were bound over. prosecutors planned to push guilty pleas before Judge McCoy next week.
Captain von Leitner reports the Graecia halted after altering course on July 28 to avoid a whale blocking her bow. The ship collided with the whale, splitting it in two, and the sea ran red. Propeller struck the remains as the vessel continued to the West Indies after sailing from New York July 26.
Rapid City experts and capitalists back a new venture to drill for natural gas oil coal and artesian water. Mr McCain will supervise with Northwestern supplying tools free of charge. The Commercial Club backs the project and cooperation with Northwestern is set to start soon.
Charge filed in Huron South Dakota on August 12 against Joseph Stackehvitch about 25 years old. He is jailed awaiting circuit court hearing for stealing a suit of clothes about 40 dollars in cash and two certificates of deposit from I W Pischake a farmer in Altoon township for whom he had been working three or four days.
The South Dakota Pharmaceutical association met in Aberdeen on August 12 selecting Sioux Falls as the 1906 meeting site with date to be decided later by Secretary Bent. Officers elected include President W. E F Michels Willow Lakes first vice president George C Sabin Redfield second vice president Dr Crosby Hitchcock secretary E C Bent Dell Rapids treasurer A A Woodward Aberdeen. Bent named as delegate to the National Association of Retail Druggists at Atlantic City September 4.
El Paso Aug 12 reports Bernard Miller of Dresden South Dakota lay unburied for weeks on Mt Franklin before burial here. Public indignation at neglect sparked a raised fund for funeral costs and related honors.

Mrs William Rhinelander Stewart entertains Anthony J Drexel and his son in Sioux Falls on private car Twilight. Drexel's first SD visit follows long ties with the Stewart family including a Drexel yacht cruise. Exact purpose of the visit unclear.
Sioux Falls report says DeSmet authorities act to stop nuisances from disreputable travelers corrupting towns across the state. Local officials plan further steps to curb disruption by both sexes amid complaints from residents.

Mrs Axtel Peterson of Charles Mix County farmer family died after injuries from a runaway team and binder. She rushed from the house to save a child, was struck by the horse drawn implement, lingered days, and died at Sioux Falls on August 15. Her act is described as heroic.

Mitchell South Dakota August 15. More than 100 Russians form the Rosedale colony twelve miles southeast of Mitchell. A major attraction is a pigeon farm with 6000 birds seen year round. Over 800 squabs are shipped weekly to Chicago markets.
