Mitchell Soldiers Enlisted Record Breaks Local South Dakota Pace
Mitchell leads South Dakota towns in Army enlistments with 25 men sent to St Paul and 11 more recruited locally. Lieut. Rice praised the city for turning out many volunteers, noting Mitchell’s 80 new soldiers as the best result seen in towns of comparable size. Several young Mitchell men, including Ernest Gregory Howard Smith and Francis Kavanaugh, depart for Ft Logan then San Francisco before sending for the Philippines.

Reformers at Epworth League temperance gathering
Mitchell area Epworth League assembly held a reform day with temperance and Christian citizenship focus. Bishop McCabe baptized infants and commissioned a deaconess, a thousand attendees bid him farewell at the depot, and a concert followed by readings and talks energized anti saloon efforts led by Rev Carhart and Dr Thoms.

Death Ends Long Illness of Geo A Clark in Arkansas
Geo A Clark a longtime resident who moved from Mitchell, South Dakota to Mena Arkansas in 1897 due to ill health died August 4 after years of illness. Born 1849 in Hamilton Ontario he married Mary McD Lockhart in 1880. He was a respected citizen, Presbyterian deacon, Mason, and will be buried at White Oak cemetery after funeral at his residence. He leaves wife and three daughters with many friends offering condolences.

Dog Alarm Saves Chamberlain From Major Fire
In Chamberlain a shed behind Scott and Fry’s drug store burned, destroying stock. A barking hunting dog owned by Hildebrand alerted residents by pawing at doors, waking the owner and triggering the alarm. Fire confined to the shed and a potential disaster averted. Joe Green notes the dog’s act saved the town and threats against the animal are dropped.

Mitchell buys fair grounds for new driving park club
A group of ten Mitchell gentlemen including James Lyons and Jas McLaughlin purchased the Iowa and Dakota Land Co. fair grounds to form a driving park club. They plan weekly matinees, improve facilities, and host a big meet aiming for outside talent. Nels Armstrong trains horses for the venture.

School Board Awards Seats and Sets Tax Levy
A special meeting awarded the seat contract to American School Furniture Co. for 198 chairs at about 400 dollars, including 60 adjustable seats for three rooms. The annual tax levy was set at 7500 dollars, 1500 less than last year, with schools to operate on the reduced funding.

South Dakota's Gold Mine at Homestake Wealthy and Vast
The Homestake mine in the Black Hills has paid dividends and mined about 22 million tons of ore valued above 80 million dollars. Daily output from the mine and associated mines runs 3,200 tons milled each day, yielding 4.80 dollars per ton and an annual production of roughly 5.5 million dollars. Superintendent T J Grier notes that 3,200 tons daily can be sustained for twenty years from ore blocked out above the 800 foot level.

Will Tax Railways More in State Assessment
The state assessment board nears completion but needs days for final figures as no footings exist yet. The Western Union Telegraph Company gains a 25 percent rise from 60 to 75 dollars per mile, with telephone firms receiving parity with other property. The Sioux City and Northern sees the highest railroad rise at 1600 dollars per mile. Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul exceed 1,000,000 dollars total, and Chicago and Northwestern over 500,000 dollars.
