John Hoelsch er born February 20 1834 in Geselts Westphalia Germany. Immigrated at 22 to work on Missouri Pacific Railway between St Louis and Jefferson City. Served in the Union army during the Civil War. Married Sophia Maines August 25 1865 and settled on a farm north of Concordia. Later lived with daughter Mrs John C Meyer near Blackburn.

Thunderstruck near Salt Springs in lightning scare
Struck by lightning caused a scare at a Salt Springs area home Saturday noon. Two girls stood in the Mike residence yard when a thunderclap knocked them down but they rose smiling. A harrow near by conducted the strike into ground, leaving remarkable holes. a corn stalk probing failed to reach bottom. Also recounts a separate lightning incident at the Republican office on the river bank north of Miami with a hole in the wall and loud report.
