The funeral will probably take place today at Horton Kansas where the deceased formerly lived. His wife and daughter Miss Hattie left this week for Horton and will stay until after the funeral.

Mrs. Elizabeth Smith aged 62 dies at her son G H Smith home near Slater from pneumonia. She was Robi Smith’s widow born in Louisville and long a Saline resident active in church and society. four sons and a daughter survive. Funeral at home led by Rev J E Abbott then Ridge Park Cemetery. Also noted: infant son of Mr and Mrs Michael Hanley West Marshall dies of cholera infantum aged 18 months with burial at Old Catholic cemetery. T A Nichols dies in Kansas City January 11 after long Saline residence. Dennis Nichols a Saline resident is a brother. John Riederer, Slater Mill president, mourns his father in San Diego. remains return to Slater after illness in California.

Hess Bros Sell Marshall Store to Keller and Unruhe

Hess brothers announce the sale of their Marshall store to Keller and Unruhe of Fayette and Louisiana respectively. Possession is set for March 1, with a heavy forfeit posted. Hess brothers, who opened in 1895 after moving from Fredonia Kansas, grew sales from 44 000 in the first year to about 200 000 annually, leaving a strong local legacy as they retire.

Patterson Paroled After Ill Prison Term in Missouri

Jefferson City reports Governor Folk granted parole to Editor Charles Patterson of Marshall who shot ex State Senator E D Martin May 30 1905. Convicted and jailed two years Patterson had been in penitentiary since Dec 16 1905 then moved to hospital before release. Parole followed medical opinion that continued confinement would threaten his life.

Parole and hospital plan for Patterson’s release

Amid strong local interest in Patterson’s case, residents of Marshall and Saline counties urged the Governor to release him on parole, stipulating he must be a law-abiding citizen. A nephew from El Paso escorted him to Kansas City for admission to a hospital in the hope of recovery.
