Death of Isaac Sponsler a Slater resident in East Slater
Isaac Sponsler longtime Slater resident dies at home in East Slater last Tuesday night after a fainting spell while watching his grandson Frank Switzer cut grass. He arrived in Slater in 1882, faced business reverses, survived by grandchildren Frank and Mary Switzer and brothers Joseph and John Spensler, with a funeral held Thursday at his residence. He was a Mexican War veteran and a devout Presbyterian. Mrs Compton resided with her daughter and son.

Grandmother Shackelford Dies at Breakfast Table Near Ridge Prairie
Grandma Shackelford, in her eighties and blind, fell dead Wednesday morning at her son Joe Shackelford’s home near Ridge Prairie. She was mother to L. C. Shackelford of Napton. Details were not available in time for this week’s issue.

Miss Lillie Theiss of New Frankfort died by drinking carbolic acid at her Columbia home after a prior suicide attempt while visiting relatives at Slater. Aged 39, she was noted as despondent and left behind relatives including Mrs Joe Hermann, Mrs Henry Bohlken, and Fred and Philip Theiss. Remains returned to New Frankfort for burial with community sympathy.

Sappington fund board pledges 20000 for new hospital
At a Monday meeting the Sappington fund board agreed that 20000 could be used toward the new hospital. With 40000 already subscribed the project nears sure completion. Geo A Murrell donated 30000 on condition that another 30000 be raised, counting the 20000 from the fund. The remaining 10000 was subscribed by local citizens, including Robt Campbell Sr with 1000.

Five Killed by Lightning in Moorehead Kansas Farm Scene
C. J. Fitzsimmons learned July 29 that his brother in law Chas Weskirken of Moorehead Kansas died after a severe thunderstorm. Five men were struck in a barn, with Weskirken fatally injured while others survived. Weskirken’s sister is Mrs Fitzsimmons and Mrs Paschal Peagler is another sister in the area.

Girl attacked on farm near Independence shocks town
Miss Clara Baldus, 16, was attacked at nine miles east of Independence while lighting a gasoline stove. A wad of cotton gagged her and a handkerchief was tied over her face before she lost consciousness. She woke tied to a chair in the dining room. Police searched the area. two Negro men were briefly questioned and released. No motive or missing items. The assailant remains at large.

A company of about 17 soldiers passing through Marshall caused little fuss. They traveled from Leavenworth Kansas to Indiana and played a game of ball on the college campus, defeating the local team soundly. They camped at Blackburn Tuesday and Slater Thursday and planned to stay in Glasgow today with Capt. Caples in command.

Slater city council adjourned after awarding the water and light plant contracts last night. J A Bartengler of Omaha won the main contract for 15219 plus 1500 for old machinery, with Rich Hill bidder Jeager 1300 lower but not taking old equipment. Bartengler also won the concrete reservoir for 1275.

Tent Meeting At Salem Church Draws Large Crowds
