Manitoba Plans Major Flood Control and Water Projects
Manitoba moves to tame its paradox of being water rich yet thirsty with three big flood control schemes tied to a provincial federal agreement. A Winnipeg floodway thirty miles long will carve out 106 million cubic yards of clay, a Portage la Prairie floodway will divert Assiniboine north into Lake Manitoba, and a Shellmouth dam will impound half a million acre-feet of water for future use. Costing about 83 million dollars, these projects aim to attract rural industry, boost farm processing, and create off farm jobs while liberalizing future irrigation as demand grows.
