Burlington Earnings Show Mixed State Rail Profit

The Burlington railroad report to Iowa shows a tough year for Iowa business with a statewide gross of 76,296,274 and expenses 34,139,152 yielding over 23 million profit. Iowa gross receipts were 10,138,292 with expenses 1,318,973 and a Iowa profit of 2,819,319, down more than half a million from the prior year due to higher costs. The main line through Town posted a net profit near the state total at 39,358 per mile.

Fremont County Plans Ditch Network Under Ex-County Surveyor

Ex county surveyor Seth Dean says Fremont is the first county in the state to regulate streams by a complete ditch system. Plans for a county wide Nishna channel straightening are underway, five miles completed and 17 more in progress under Dean. Farmers will grow corn on previously swampy land along the Nishna this year.

Rankin Barn Burns Destructively in Tarkio Mo

Last week a fire destroyed Dave Rankin's large hexagonal barn and its contents at Tarkio Missouri, with about 200 tons of hay and 3000 bushels of grain burned. No insurance existed on barn or contents. The brick structure, one of the region’s largest, valued at around 30 thousand dollars, was noted for its elegance, often mistaken for a residence by visitors.

Missing Bridegroom Delays Nebraska Wedding in Red Oak

The Red Oak Express reports Emma Nelson was to wed Clarence C. Stump of Falls City Nebraska. The ceremony was canceled when Stump did not appear. he was last seen boarding the Falls City train, having just withdrawn 8700. He is 22, about 195 pounds, with dark hair and eyes. His parents in Falls City fearfully await news.
