Fourteen Horses Burned in Car at Pacific Junction

A box car from Council Bluffs to MaitlandMo carrying fourteen horses including a stallion and a jack burned at Pacific Junction Monday. Sparks from the engine likely ignited bedding. water failure and limited hose access hampered efforts. Three horses were saved but had to be shot next day. the others died from smoke and suffocation. Road fares rise under new three cent law

On Burlington and other roads some fares exceed former levels. Between Carson and Macedonia the adult fare rose from 9 to 10 cents for a three mile span, while Hastings to Emerson over five miles costs 12 cents. Children now pay near adult rates, with a ten cent minimum.

County Board Begins 1908 Juror Selection at Glenwood

The County Board met at Glenwood to select jurors for 1908. About 625 names are to be chosen, including 400 for trial jurors, 160 talesmen, and 75 grand jurors. At noon today, fewer than half had been picked. Next Monday, 8 W Creech will replace A J Chantry. In 1907 Clerk F H Davis issued 103 marriage licenses, a decrease of nine from 1906, and about twenty divorces were granted.
