A box car from Council Bluffs to MaitlandMo carrying fourteen horses including a stallion and a jack burned at Pacific Junction Monday. Sparks from the engine likely ignited bedding. water failure and limited hose access hampered efforts. Three horses were saved but had to be shot next day. the others died from smoke and suffocation. The owner, Shermat Creech, had planned to start a livery at Maitland. Value listed as 1500.
On Burlington and other roads some fares exceed former levels. Between Carson and Macedonia the adult fare rose from 9 to 10 cents for a three mile span, while Hastings to Emerson over five miles costs 12 cents. Children now pay near adult rates, with a ten cent minimum.
