Wedgwood Masterpiece Portland Vase Copy Revered
Sir William Hamilton praised Wedgwood for his jasperware copy of the Portland Vase, made under the Derby and British Museum connections. The Vase, long linked to the Barberini name, passed through Byres and Duchess of Portland before arriving in England in 1784. Wedgwood’s three year labor by Hackwood and others yielded a prized work, unmatched in market value by later copies. Gibbon’s decision to write in English over French is attributed to Hume’s persuasive letter.
