Washington plans show a prolonged session into January with a cleanup drive on many bills. Roosevelt labeled measures as preferred while opponents threaten filibusters against court reform and a push to raise funds for housing and infrastructure amid a broader agenda.
James W Wood resigns as postmaster of Minersville after three decades service. The office will open to fill the vacancy via civil service examination and appointment by the president.
Veterans of the Es calante post plan a July 4 observance in Milford with sunrise services and a night dance. The event mirrors last year’s success with local business support, proceeds to the VFW Auxiliary treasury, and a local water carnival at the pool. Fireworks and candy showers will be funded by community contributions, not treasuries.
Joe Rickerson and V. Waddoups left Wednesday morning for the airports north of Milford to finish the painting job they contracted last fall.
The Utah National Parks Council will send six Milford Scouts Jay Jeffers Douglas Moore Douglas Ryan Thorpe Wadiingham George Connell and Richard Barnes among the largest Utah group to the 1940 National Scout Jamboree in Washington DC. The contingent travels from Provo July 19 spending time across 16 states including Chicago and New York City then Palmyra before the jamboree.
Taxpayers will vote June 28 on a 55000 bond issue to improve Milford Beaver and Minersville school plants with 45000 grant from the federal government. The $100000 program covers shop buildings auditoriums remodelings and additions under Beaver county board of education. Any registered voter who paid 1936 taxes may vote.
Funeral services for Mrs. John Benjamin Duncan aged 76 were conducted last Wednesday at the L D S chapel with Bishop A H Baker presiding. Speakers included E R Moody former Bishop William A Miller and Mr Baker. Interment followed in the local cemetery where the grieving husband prepared caskets for both. Johannah Elizabeth Fingen Duncan born April 2 1861 in North Carolina joined the LDS faith and moved to Milford with her husband.
Feark Browne Robinson 72, longtime Duluth Land and Investment figure, died suddenly near Rocky Ford dam in Minersville canyon. Born Oct 4, 1864 in Indianapolis, he studied engineering at Cornell, worked on Oregon Short Line, later with Kuhn irrigation projects. Survived by wife L Maye Hughes Franke Robinson, two step-daughters Kendall and Lucile, and several siblings. funeral planned in Utah, cremation in Salt Lake per family wishes.
Former State Senator George Jefferson his brother in law Hal Sthurthwaite and J M Williams a recent law school graduate from Los Angeles survived a midnight car crash six miles southeast of town. Their car left the oil road, plunged into a canal then surfaced bottom side up. Williams revived the unconscious pair and flagged help. Williams suffered a badly cut knee and broken ribs. Jefferson sustained a broken right wrist and bruises while Sthurthwaite had cuts and a badly shattered right shoulder. Jefferson and Sthurthwaite were hospitalized. Williams is recovering at home. The accident occurred while returning from a late store check ending near Cates road junction. (Continued on Inst page)
Shannon elected Milford Lions Club president for the coming year at a Wednesday meeting in the Ashton Pacific dining room. Officers named include J. M. Hughes as first vice president C. L. Firmage as third vice president David J. William reelected secretary treasurer and E. B. L. Smith as Lion tamer. Directors for the term to June 30 1939 are Harold Cline and J. L. Sanford with holdovers R. Moody and George Jefferson. The group discussed preserving Rockcorrse water for sheep and urged transfer of public lands near the Mineral range to forest service supervision. A note on funding for the local deaconess pastor Miss Estes drew concern but was deemed constrained by national LIONS rules.
Mr and Mrs Myrthue Evans of Safford Arizona spent Monday with Drs and Mrs Loyis Fh Kutt Jer en route to Salt Lake City and Midad Idaho to visit relatives. Mrs Evans formerly Mae Kohler taught in Milford about six years ago.
A eastbound freight derailed near Milford on Tuesday night, stranding about 200 passengers from three trains until around 8:30 am. Union Pacific and local dining cars supplied meals as passengers were hoisted to safety, many buying snacks and tickets for a delayed movie visit while awaiting assistance.
A Milford chapter invites all ages from three to ninety to join swimming and lifesaving classes at the local swimming pool from June 28 to July 2. Participants will learn to swim and gain preparedness in water safety and rescue skills.
George Cunpeau, a telegraph operator, witnessed two nine pound trout caught near Fish Lake Little Reservoir off Beaver Canyon. A wobbler plug and light fly rod were used. a live Winnow bait reportedly contributed. The larger fish measured 19 inches, 15 inch girth, and weighed 9 pounds.
The fourth car of ore is nearing dispatch to smelters from the Quadmetals mine west of town. Parley B. Fisher, superintendent, reports ore richens as work expands below the old Rat tier, Carbonate, and historic claims. An electric hoist upgrade reduces trips, boosting daily progress and offsetting fuel costs. A future mill expansion to 50 tons is anticipated, aided by ample water supply confirmed by United States Smelting Co. manager Ramley.
L A Wyraught a popular Shell products distributor in Beaver county was ordered to the local hospital on Wednesday afternoon for an emergency appendectomy performed at 5 o'clock. Despite a poor appendix condition and the ward crowded with auto wreck victims, he is recovering nicely.
Deupay Kirk departed Spiday to Carlmenia where he will be employed this summer. The Tare est historically taught there has produced 3- and -polinders, most taken on sites after substantial hard work.
