A native of Cer twenty three, living in Paterson, was arrested in Ellenville after a thorough examination in Judge Ward's office. He allegedly admitted forging maps of the region and claimed a wider scope of activity. Suspect Strabisch, detained for questioning, awaits transfer to federal authorities.
In M Gaynor versus Harrait property dispute at Breezy Point, John M Gaynor appears. The estate includes a large brick house on five acres with an orchard and a connected chapel used for Sunday services. The case involves the Harrait estate via Frevk Harding and a planned summer residence, with decisions pending on the chapel and occupancy.
A Circleville resident, Eli Bennet, was injured Monday evening when a car struck him and his team as they were returning home. The vehicle fled the scene, later linked to a driver seen near Franklin Square, with Bennet’s condition described as serious but not fatal. doctors treated him and he was expected to recover.

The curfew under the Children’s Welfare Ordinance is revived by a Common Council resolution led by Alderman Cole. Three strokes at 8 pm daily until October 1 will compel under 15s to leave the streets if unaccompanied. Some aldermen opposed citing prior suspensions and church service disruption. others supported restoring the one hour earlier enforcement.
President urges labor to remain on the war program amid national mobilization. The Federation of Labor reports over 2.7 million members and 28,000 local unions, with about $55,408 raised during the year, per Secretary Bjorrison at the convention.

Passengers arriving today report a British steamer attacked and seemingly sunk a German submarine off the American coast on Sunday. An American army officer who witnessed a single shot at the Uboat, about 150 yards away, believes a clean hit was made as two convoying destroyers moved in and dropped depth charges.
A state road from Goshen toward Chester was closed this morning. Tourists traveling east should leave Goshen by Craigville Avenue near the Bacon property, as the detour adds about one mile to Chester. The gravel road is good but narrow.

Mrs B B Williams dies at 6 am at her Coldenham home after a period of illness. a longtime resident active in Orange County Fair and local benevolent work. survived by husband Benjamin B Williams, son Hyland of Philadelphia, and brother William H Goodale of Paso Robles. funeral plans not yet announced.
This evening from 7 to 9 at Excelsiors' truck house Middletown Fire Department holds its annual election. Thomas F L Mahon of McGorolds, renominated for second assistant chief, plans to run again amid talks of rivals for several offices. A company member noted likely action and unresolved outcomes.
Alfred H. Smith announces federal managers and general managers for railroads in the Eastern Territory and districts. Noted appointees include J. H. Nuelle as manager of the New York Ontario & Western Railroad based in Middletown and A. J. Stone as manager of Erie Railroad with New York office. Nuelle becomes general superintendent of the O&W, succeeding the late Edward Canfield.
Fred S. Rogers and other local men joined delegates from Albany Paterson Passaic Newark Kingston for the Newburgh Rotary Club’s first annual meeting and banquet at The Palatine. Rev George Du Ban gave an address and other presidents spoke, highlighting a successful year for the Newburgh club and listing officers Clarence Miller president and Graham Wiltshire as vice president among others.
George Shaw seeks PSC approval to operate a motor bus from Newburgh to Monroe about 26 miles, serving a summer resort link to New York boats. Competing with the Erie Railroad, Shaw proposes two daily trips June 1 to October 1 via Highland Mills Central Valley and Harriman. Proceeding decision expected soon.
A Brazilian steamship reported sighting an armed submarine in battle with an American transport off the southern New Jersey coast. The unarmed transport fled at full speed toward a friendly patrol boat as the submarine appeared near the surface with its guns visible but distant, leaving the outcome uncertain.

Allied reports say the German drive between Montdidier and Neyon pressed on with French resistance at several villages. French counterattacks restored lines south of Belroy, St Mary, Marqueglie, and Vandelicourt while Ribecourt line weakened then held. British claim 232 prisoners near Amiens Morlancourt front. Pershing casualty list reports 24 killed or died of wounds and 7 wounded in action and other deaths.
James Cooper faced trial in Port Jervis in a March saloon stabbing incident involving Sterling Pisgery and Spencer Broadhead. Cooper claimed self defense after Pisgery drew a knife. Prosecution testimony included Mary E. Brown and Lewise Jackson. Jury to report later. court adjourns until Monday for Matthew Miller case and related proceedings.
