Herbert B Royce of the Sanitary Detachment First New York Regiment of Infantry reported to Captain Cookinham as a private. Transfer to the Petrolia command was requested earlier. Royce, an early organizer, is among the unit's first members with four years service and a prior promotion to sergeant first class in 1916.
Fifteen hundred members of the Home Defense League were hurriedly called out at noon to assist in the registrar work in New York City. The emergency call followed appeals from registrars, with many applicants stamped for registration, especially in foreign sections requiring interpreters.
Newburgh June 5 a district attorney and May grand jury reported forty two prisoners entered pleas before Judge Seeger yesterday. The long term county court trial list includes the Rev Arcour Worthington with counsel J D Wilson Jr. Jail capacity tested as sheriffs move prisoners. Several defendants faced grand larceny burglary and similar charges with varied pleas and suspended or probationary sentences.
