Trial, Newburgh, for Charles Conklin in Wright murder
Charles Herbert Conklin faces a December 26 start in Supreme Court for the first degree murder of Ernest Wright, a Mountainville cattle dealer. The case stems from a confession to Under Sheriff Henry Hallock claiming accidental gun discharge near Wright’s barn. Conklin, defended by J. D. Wilson Jr., says he intended to shoot a woodchuck and that the gun discharged unexpectedly as Wright cried out. The trial will use a special juror panel. Wright’s pockets were found turned inside out and his watch was taken.

Newburgh man James Ryan a bricklayer on Newburgh housing was killed by smoke in his boarding house at 324 First street shortly after midnight Monday. A portable oil heater near his bed likely started the blaze as he rested fully dressed. The fire spread through the floor and bed, the department extinguishing the flames after an alarm from box 123.

Wm. A Hurtin completes 140 mile walk in four days
William A. Hurtin reached home Tuesday night after walking from Liberty to Binghamton, a 140 mile trek in four days. He covered 33 miles on Tuesday in 11 hours despite an inch of snow at Liberty in the morning. Hurtin says the tramp has done him much good and he feels fine.
