The 78th annual Orange County Agricultural Society exhibition will open Tuesday, August 13, and run through August 16. New York officials warned Wednesday night that impostors claiming Red Cross affiliation are scaring families by falsely reporting soldiers as dead injured or missing. The Federal Trade Commission recommends to the President that the government acquire and control all major stock yards cold storage plants warehouses refrigerator cars and cattle cars to end a monopoly. It cites Swift Armour Morris Wilson Cudahy and Co as dominant players and says the move would secure meat and other essential foods for the country.

A Saharan wind storm brought relief, cooling to 78 degrees by morning, while firemen, railroad crews, and residents endured the oppressive conditions. A Erie fireman was treated after prostration on a locomotive and later discharged. heavy dust, flying debris, and subsequent rain provided brief respite, with farmers hoping for rain to refresh the parched area.
Albany reports two petitions filed Tuesday in the Secretary of State's Office were not recorded. Clarence E. Williams of Utica seeks the House seat in the Herkimer Greida district to oppose Homer P. Snder. John M. Purcell of Port Jervis seeks the Senate seat in the twenty seventh district to oppose Senator John D. Savers. Purcell, a Port Jervis estate businessman and former butcher, is among the filings. Also, Orange County Fair entries close today with the Enterprise Electrical Co. office open to 9 PM for exhibitors.

Mary Warren Silliman, daughter of the late Rev. Geo. D. Silliman, died at Pasadena California on July 29. She leaves two brothers Rev. W. W. Silliman of Malone New York and Lieut. George S. Silliman U S Medical Reserve Corps. Rev. George D. Silliman moved from Middletown to Castle
