Goshen August 7 1918 first day of Historic Track races proved hot yet vibrant. Attendance rose as horses finished in strong times while proceeds benefited the Red Cross. Secretary Weston steered a cheerful program with three heats ending before 4 pm.
Erie system Train No 1934 derailed near Paronne Avenue ferry Jersey City causing one death and minor injuries. Coaches overturned and derailed stranding several trains, delaying thousands of morning riders by 30 to 50 minutes as crews worked to clear the wreck and restore service in New York bound commutes.
The heat wave hammered Middletown as temperatures neared 90 degrees by midafternoon and stayed high until 5 pm with a slight drop later.
