Rail strike cripples railroads as layoffs hit automakers

On the second day of a broad railroad strike affecting 42 states, two major automakers announced layoffs amid parts shortages. An estimated half of daily food shipments by rail were halted as two thirds of railroads faced a virtual standstill. The walkout began with a 4,600-member local in a dispute with a Virginia based railroad and expanded to 43 carriers.

Pilot confusion in PSA jet crash near San Diego

In San Diego a PSA Boeing 727 and a Cessna 172 collided over a residential area killing at least 150. NTSB official Phillip Hogue said a second light twin may have influenced the disaster and questioned whether the PSA pilot saw the third aircraft or any aircraft at all. He noted radio frequency issues at Lindbergh Field and testified about possible miscommunications in the control tower.

Airliner Collision Over North Park Sparks Casualties

An airliner crash near the North Park neighborhood killed 135 aboard the jet, two in a Cessna and at least 13 on the ground. Pilot James MecFeron, 45, reported he was going down as his jet plunged toward the area while a single-engine plane may have been involved. Nine people were injured as investigators consider flight paths, with tapes to study craft registration.
