Air safety rules tighten for commuter lines and taxis

FAA announced tighter safety standards aligning commuter lines with trunk carriers. New rules allow larger aircraft up to 30 seats, improve operations and maintenance, and affect 2000 plus commuter airlines and 2300 air taxi operators. Estimated compliance costs reach 33.4 million dollars for all operators. Bond said commuter passenger volumes expected to rise from 85 million last year to 16.5 million in 1990, with growth projections and industry consultations dating to 1972.

Deadly midair and ground collision near Lindbergh Airport leaves 147 dead

In the worst US avia tion disaster, a Southwest Airlines jet with 135 aboard and a Cessna 172 collided near Lindbergh Airport at 0 am Monday. The crash killed all on both planes and over 10 more on the ground in North Park. Firefighters battled blazes as residents fled, with a 1 mile visibility and flight advisories in effect. Investigators collected cockpit and tower tapes for the NTSB while authorities named Marine Sgt David Boswell and instructor Martin Kazy aboard the Cessna.

Shadow radioman Bret Morrison dies in Hollywood heat

The Shadow voice Bret Morrison died of a heart attack while seated behind the wheel of his car in Hollywood. Friends attribute the death to extreme heat during Southern California's heat wave, noting his role as Lamont Cranston in the 1930s and 40s.

Striking Dayton teachers jailed for picketing

Twelve striking Dayton teachers were jailed this morning after picketing Wilbur Wright High School. Five women and seven men are in the city jail, with no teachers held in Montgomery County custody.
