Bostock Shot Dead as Striking Blast Hits Car in Gary

Lyman Bostock, 27, a free agent outfielder with the California Angels, was mortally wounded by an errant shotgun blast to the back seat of a 1976 Buick in Gary Indiana after an evening encounter related to a separation case involving Leonard Smith and his estranged wife Barbara Smith. Smith, 31, was captured hours later and faced formal charges in a case intertwined with a domestic dispute. The tragedy unfolds as Bostock, who had the five year contract valued at 2.7 million dollars, was en route home from a road trip and had spent the day in Gary with relatives after a game. The funeral was announced for Thursday in Los Angeles, and police noted Bostock did not appear to have known his killer or the Smiths’ marital problems.
