Philadelphia AP report says wooly bear caterpillars forecast a mild season with pale fronts and lighter coats. Herbert Krone, 82, of Lancaster, alleges 97 percent accuracy and notes this year’s blonde woolies signal an average to warm winter pattern.
CINCINNATI AP Charges against Scotia Coal Co will be filed after an Owen Fork Kentucky mine disaster in March that killed 26. MESA chief Robert E Barrett will lead investigators into the mine where 11 bodies remain entombed. Recovery teams progress toward the sealed section as officials expect to reach the bodies by mid October.
Dayton Ohio AP. Dayton's two dailies resumed publication after Teamsters Local 957 ratified a three year contract with Dayton Newspapers Inc. The union won a $1.35 hourly increase over three years and dropped a cost of living clause. The 85 member local struck at midnight after rejecting a mediator pause. During the walkout the Journal Herald and Daily News issued alternating editions delivered by USPS.
Rhodesia pursues a step by step move to black majority rule. The ANC factions clash over a two year transition after Ian Smith endorses the plan backed by Kissinger. Moderates seek quicker change while militants condemn the pace as insufficient.

A government prosecutor says he will file a motion to free convicted bank robber Patricia Hearst on bail while lawyers appeal her conviction. The move comes as Hearst’s defense prepares arguments on appeal seeking release pending review.
Police say a gang of juveniles from well to do families, led by 17-year-old Rodney Nally, coordinated about 180 burglaries in Elgin. Six youths, including two 17-year-olds and a 29-year-old woman, have been arrested. 40 burglaries cleared, with 140 more possibly tied to the group. The loot included cars, motorbikes, radios, and other goods peddled to a fence. Nally stored items at a rented house and distributed cash to younger members. Nally is in jail for beating a boy, with others charged in burglary cases.
Veteran zookeeper Harry Wurster, 46, was injured when Julia the 30 year old elephant seized him with her trunk, dragged him into the cage and mauled him. Senior keeper John Adornetto, 37, freed Wurster, who was admitted in satisfactory condition with cuts and bruises.
