A 51 year old man in Port Lavaca Texas contracted the first U S cholera case in over five decades. Doctors say he was diagnosed quickly and treated at Champ Traylor Hospital, saving his life. He recalls severe pain and credits quick care and faith for his survival.
DETROIT AP Chrysler Corp and the United Auto Workers reach a contract with a weekly 14 hour overtime limit and retirement with full pension after 30 years on the job.
Pickets continued at Chrysler plants in Twinsburg and Toledo as UAW and Chrysler tentatively agreed on a three year contract. About 7,700 workers struck Toledo and Twinsburg sites when talks failed to seal a master pact. The agreement raises wages, limits hours, adds safety inspections and provides a revised pension and retirement terms.
A senior Republican source told The Washington Post Spiro Agnew plans to resign this week amid Maryland corruption probe pressure on his family and possible White House push. Agnew’s spokesman declined direct comment while noting rumors about the vice president’s fate.
Four steel companies and three executives pleaded no contest to price fixing charges in Houston federal court. The case covers 46 000 tons of steel worth 8 5 million sold in the Houston area with up to 1 year in prison and 50 000 in fines per defendant. A second indictment names nine more firms and executives tied to about 175 000 tons or 30 million in Texas sales.
E Dennis Barnes of Upper Sandusky files suit against Secretary of State and Crawford County Elections Board asking the Ohio Supreme Court to bar a 3 4 mill levy for the Crawford Upper Sandusky Joint Vocational School District asserting vocational education is unconstitutional for common schools. Assistant Attorney General Thomas Martin urges denial saying the action duplicates Wyandot County case and seeks one legal remedy.
Hugo Winterhalter, noted conductor and arranger, died of cancer at Greenwich Hospital at age 64 after a two year illness. A big band era figure, he worked with Count Basie the Dorseys and Vaughn Monroe and helped pioneer long playing records. He served as musical director for RCA Victor from 1950 to 1963.
Bruce Howard Riley, 19, described as an art lover by police, was charged with burglary and assault with a deadly weapon after forcing a guard to show him a Cincinnati Art Museum tour at 4 am using a machete. Guard McKinley Smith, 55, was hospitalized with a possible heart reaction.
