Wingwalker and racer die at National Air Races
At Reno Nevada, 23 year old wingwalker Gordon McCollum from Huntington Beach and 40 year old racer M D Washburn of Houston were killed within minutes in separate accidents during the first day of the National Championship Air Races at Stead Airport. McCollum died when a downdraft pulled a inverted pass, while Washburn’s AT6 struck a 500 foot pylon during a heat race.
