Tornadoes Hit Galveston After Carla Toll Rises

A Gulf of Mexico waterspout spawned tornadoes that swept across Galveston Island early today killing at least six people. The courthouse sheltering about 1,200 evacuees suffered shattered windows and flying glass. Red Cross workers urged people to drop to the floor as the twisters struck.

Pentagon weigh says B70 bomber push may win favor

Washington AP A strong possibility emerged that the Pentagon could reverse course and urge buying more B62 bombers and accelerating B70 development. Final decision rests with President Kennedy after McNamara’s recommendation as Congress debates a $46.7 billion defense bill and impoundment powers. Air Force officials hope McNamara shifts from opposition. The service also seeks about 50 additional B52 bombers amid a fleet of roughly 500.

Babies Born Amid Storm Shelters Across Texas

Hurricane winds did not halt life in Texas as new births occurred in shelters and hospitals. A baby arrived under flashlight light in Angleton with three nurses assisting, two more births occurred at Galveston County Hospital in Lamarque, and a refugee birth followed for Mrs. Stephen Dupuis in Huntsville after evacuation.

Typhoon Pamela Kills 17 in Formosa Rips Taipei

Typhoon Pamela swept northern Formosa with winds to 135 mph, killing at least 17 and leaving thousands homeless. In Taipei 4,330 were left homeless, roofs ripped off and utilities disrupted while Americans in the city reported no injuries. Authorities estimate storm damage in the millions.
