Port Lavaca Texas report notes Hurricane Carla posed little danger to Indianola on Matagorda Bay. The town, once a thriving shipping center, has stood as a ghost town for about 75 years with only crumbling foundations remaining as reminders of its past.
Carla the century’s fiercest Texas coast hurricane lashed Louisiana and Texas with 173 mph winds and 11-foot tides as 400000 plus residents fled coastal areas. At 11 am the storm was 65 miles east of Corpus Christi with an eye 60 miles wide and expected to strike land near Port Aransas this afternoon.
Information from a Dutch freighter indicates Hurricane Debbie is tracking away from the United States after passing near its center with winds near 85 mph. Miami forecasters, aided by satellite data, say Debbie will not threaten the mainland as Betsy’s trough fades in the Atlantic.
