Hartford Courant reporter Jack Zaiman asked former President Harry S. Truman to search his pockets after a 98 cent autographs pen vanished at a Democratic dinner. Truman checked twice but the pen remained missing until a Democratic courier returned it later.
A UC135 tanker from Ellsworth Air Force Base crashed into Mt Kit Carson near Spokane as fog shrouded the ravine. All 44 aboard including 39 airmen and four crew were feared dead. Rescue teams recovered 33 bodies by nightfall. The aircraft was en route to Fairchild Air Force Base for base repairs, with visibility near zero at impact. Local volunteers aided in the search, guided by the scent of smoke amid the wreckage.
President Kennedy flies south on a four state, non political trip to assess U S booster programs at Huntsville and Cape Canaveral. He will review Saturn and Titan rockets with von Braun and observe a Saturn engine test. Schirra may greet him at Cape Canaveral ahead of a six orbit flight.
In France a New York official sought the return of Dr. Harvey Lothringer and his secretary Theresa Carillo after their arrest in Andorra on a warrant tied to the dismemberment death of Barbara Soframento. Lothringer faced charges linked to a 1961 abortion. Carillo was not charged.
CORNING Iowa AP National Farmers Organization President Oren Lee Staley urged tighter clamps on livestock as he addressed about 1,200 at a Mason City dinner. He said the holding action has been more effective than expected, with hog receipts lagging while nearly half of cattle receipts were stockers and feeders.
Tokyo and Washington exchanged documents setting Japan's payment of 490 million dollars for postwar U.S. aid. The first installment of 21,959,125 dollars is due next March.
The forecast calls for fair to crisp conditions tonight with a low around 53 under clear skies. Wed nesday will see a warm day with a high near 78 and partly cloudy skies continuing the warm trend. Yesterday reached a high of 79 by 12:30 pm and an overnight low of 52 by 6 am. Middletown recorded .08 inches of rain yesterday afternoon.
The Soviet government told the United States an attack on Cuba would begin a war possibly turning nuclear. It warned against provocation and said it would aid any peace-loving state if war were unleashed. The statement also called for settlement of the Berlin question and liquidation of the occupation regime in Berlin.
London AP reports fugitive spy Robert A. Soblen died in Hillingdon Hospital after a barbiturate overdose and exhaustion following convulsions. Soblen, once facing a life term for wartime espionage for the Soviet Union, had been deported from Britain and was naturalized in 1947. His brother Jack Soblen also faced a seven-year federal sentence for spying actions.
With a history of mental illness including swallowing nuts and bolts, Jack testified for the U S government as a key witness during his brother’s four week 1961 trial.
Red China blasted the United States for the Nationalist U2 overflight and warned against provocations. Washington offered no comment as both sides outlined past reconnaissance flights without halting them.
Nationalist China still regards the mainland as its territory and rejects assertions that its flights intrude. Other Nationalist aircraft drop leaflets and food over the mainland.
Havana radio said a Cuban freighter named San Pascual and a British sugar carrier Newlane were fired on off Cuba's north coast. The blasts followed an Aug. 24 Havana shelling by anti-Castro groups. The reports name the attacker as a pirate ship and quote Juan Manuel Salvat in Caracas.
Fidel Castro accused the U S Congress of banditry and piracy in a Key West address. He said lawmakers have turned Cuba into an election year political football and questioned if the United States considers Cuba a peril while claiming his nation has similar rights.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla. Astronaut Walter M Schirra Jr delayed six orbit mission to Sept 28 to allow additional prep. Officials cited readiness evaluations and unofficial reports that the Rose Knot tracking ship was not ready. Atlas booster and craft in good condition. A press HQ will operate from Cape Colony Inn Cocoa Beach amid controversy over Life magazine’s payments to the crew.
Washington reports the United States will resume atmospheric nuclear tests in the Pacific. An AEC spokesman said tests likely restart later this month or in October, with no detonation before Sept. 28 when Walter Schirra Jr. plans six orbit flight. The Johnston Island safety zone will reopen Sept. 22 after repairs to the launch area.
