Soviet guards cleared a U S troop convoy of 391 officers and men in 62 vehicles through Communist controlled Berlin highway to West Germany without incident. The move was for training and involved forces from West Berlin to West Germany.
In Indianapolis police identify the 4 year old girl known as Smiley as Jeannie Lee Odom, daughter of Lois Jean Littler. Littler and her mother Ruby St Clair are charged with child neglect, each held on 2500 dollar bonds after a hurried reunion at the Marion County Children's Guardian Home.
Representatives of the Chicago and North Western Railroad and its striking telegraphers meet acting Labor Secretary Wirtz in Washington to settle a 12 day walkout. Wirtz, Kennedy appointee to head the Labor Department, will lead the negotiations as officials caution against expecting a quick settlement though some progress is noted.
In Capitola California a 10th annual begonia festival saw disasters from a restaurant fire at kickoff to a queen float fire during cleanup. A forgery arrest occurred in the queen contest and Saturday a riot drew 1200 people. Two men jailed five injured. 40 volunteers and deputies restored order with hoses.
The National Farmers Organization plans to withhold feeder livestock if packers halt slaughtering to prop up dwindling beef supplies. President Oren Lee Staley pressed DOJ and congressional probes into possible collusion and price fixing by major retailers and a large packer. Market receipts dropped sharply as the action began, and Staley claimed farmers are taking action themselves to address rising meat prices.
President Kennedy is to hear from former President Eisenhower on the European scene including Berlin tensions and the Atlantic Alliance. Eisenhower recently returned from a NATO tour with Mrs. Eisenhower and two grandchildren.
Forecaster notes chilly temps return tonight with a low near 57 and showers. A warming trend starts Wednesday while Friday brings cooler breezes for the weekend. Paris AP reports President Charles de Gaulle returned from a six day state trip to West Germany with strong signals of closer military economic and political ties. He met with West German President Heinrich Luebke and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer at Ludwigsburg Castle.
Government scientist reports common clays can cheaply purify water contaminated by radioactive fallout and aid in disposing of radioactive waste. Six clay types remove cesium and strontium-90 from liquid nuclear wastes, with absorption acting like a sponge. An ounce can remove most strontium-90 from a gallon, and flows through clay columns remove more than 90 percent. Ranking clays by effectiveness places Conasauga shale first and Utah halloysite last.
The Senate Armed Services Committee opens hearings on President Kennedy requesting stand-by authority to order 150,000 reservists back if needed. McNamara to be first witness. action may wrap within a week. Concerns center on Berlin and readiness for caseload if Cuba tensions rise.
Senator Kenneth Keating of New York says he is troubled by signals that U S and Soviet leaders are considering a diplomatic bargain linking Cuba and Berlin. He warned that Khrushchev may have pressed Kennedy to “lay off on Berlin” in return for U S restraint in Cuba, suggesting a tied pledge in the cold war crisis.
