Limestone with Rumensin Boosts Ohio Silage Feed Efficiency
Beef producers can mix ground limestone with corn silage and Rumensin to boost lactic acid content and feed efficiency. Dr. Floyd Byers reports that 1 percent high calcium limestone increases silage lactic acid and, with Rumensin, adds about 6 to 7 percent efficiency. In 120 Hereford calves, combined limestone and Rumensin raised slaughter-day gains by 14 percent versus standard silage, with Rumensin alone improving 6.4 percent and limestone alone 8.2 percent.
