Nearly 200 state and local officers enforced calm in a 14 block area after a violent riot left one man dead and several stores burned. Police say about 150 people, mostly Negro, joined the violence. Roving patrols and firebombings spurred curfew deliberations by the city council.
Iran marks a national day of mourning after a northeast quake killed over 8,000, injured 2,692 and left about 100,000 homeless. Officials report 8,222 dead, with no foreign victims, as Shah Pahlavi coordinates relief from Tehran. Army convoys deliver water and food amid aftershocks and water system damage in tent cities.
Off duty Patrolman Robert Stopek beaten after his car is boxed in by 20 cyclists from the Gods Children and Few groups. One rider James Casper is wounded. two pistols and two shotguns found in the attackers’ car along with pills and a syringe. Police rounded up 61 riders, including nine women, as labor day rally tensions simmered.
In Prague the Communist party elected a new high command dominated by liberals despite the Soviet occupation. The central committee expanded to 194 members with 21-member presidium. two conservatives, Bilak and Pillar, remain pro-Soviet. Soviet troops blocked Bratislava moves while Czechoslovakia seeks Moscow’s withdrawal terms.
Maryland Governor Spiro T. Agnew arrives in Columbus to play 18 holes with Bob Hope and three Republican governors at Scioto Country Club. He plans to return September 27 to address the Republican State Convention and forego political engagements that day.
The Middletown forecast calls for clear and cool conditions with highs in the upper 70s. Tonight's low should be in the 50s with partly cloudy skies. Yesterday's high reached 76 and the morning low was 55. Weekend rainfall totaled 0.34 inch in the Middletown area.
Washington officials report a Kremlin denial to Dobrynin about invading Romania easing fears in the Johnson administration. A State Department briefing followed a 50 minute meeting with Dobrynin in which Moscow did not flatly promise non intervention. NATO envoys were briefed as analysts weigh implications for Europe's security and US troop plans in West Germany.
