Four-way transplant marks historic Houston surgery
In Houston on Saturday doctors led by Dr. Michael E. DeBakey transplanted a heart, one lung and two kidneys from a single donor into four recipients. Corneas were placed in an eye bank. Donor was 20-year-old Nelva Lou Hernandez, shot Friday night. Recipients included William C. Carroll of Arizona and William J. Whaley of Florida. The heart transplant tied for the world’s 36th. Houston’s 11th.
