Billy Mitchells Air Power Crusade From Hatteras Tests
Forty years after Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell led a squadron from a Hatteras airstrip against the battleships New Jersey and Virginia the early push for air power is recalled. The 1921 and 1923 tests demonstrated aircraft could threaten ships, despite Navy doubts. Mitchell faced court martial and later exile before broad recognition came.
