After two years of campaigning the race centers on Richard Nixon and George McGovern as voters focus on personalities and character. The closing argument asks if McGovern is radical and irresponsible and if Nixon can win despite the controversy.

US and North Vietnam reportedly agree to resume talks that could lead to a cease fire by Sunday. South Vietnamese President Thieu may sign, while White House officials caution no rapid settlement. Indonesia Hungary Canada and Poland named to an international supervisory commission overseeing cease fire in Vietnam Laos and Cambodia.
The forecast calls for cloudy skies with rain likely tonight and lows in the upper 40s. Expect more rain Wednesday with continued mild temperatures and overcast skies.
An explosion at a Ben Franklin variety store in Lake City Minnesota during a Halloween prizes event for children left at least six dead and nine injured. Authorities say a bulldozer setback ruptured a gas main triggering the blast as volunteers searched in rain. Among the dead are Mrs Ray Kehren and her son Timothy 10 and local store workers.
