Van Dyke and Company struggles with varied sketches
AP review notes Dick Van Dyke’s NBC special In the family hour fails to spark despite Carl Reiner Mary Tyler Moore and Ike and Tina Turner cameo. Weak opening low key monologue and lackluster office skit contrasted by a standout spoof golf bulletin and a robot magician caper near the end.

Van Dyke Could Be NBC’s Silent Comedy Crown Hope
The show hints Van Dyke may become a top fight gag contender once worn by Ernie Novacs. He has talent and imagination for visual humor, and with a weekly NBC slot could refine it beyond talking sketches.
