Gunman Holds Six In Bank Standoff In Cleveland

Police and FBI met inside a West Side Cleveland bank with gunman Edward O. Watkins after he seized six hostages four women and two men and threatened to blow up the bank. Officers reported the hostages appeared to be in good condition following an overnight ordeal.

Prison record spans 41 years

Eddie Watkins, 56, once of Cleveland, tied to a bank hostage incident, has a 41 year criminal history. He was sentenced in 1969 for 13 robberies, paroled in 1975, and later appeared on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list. He demanded about 50000 dollars and a getaway van but was ultimately not granted his demands. The case drew in Judge William K. Thomas who had imposed a 45 year sentence.

Americans Freed From Hanoi Reach Bangkok Via Laos

Nine Americans captured in South Vietnam last spring arrived in Bangkok with two Canadians two Filipinos and an Australian. The group flew from Hanoi to Vientiane and then to Bangkok in a UN chartered Laotian plane. UN officials said all were fit though one man cited psychological hardship from solitary confinement. Names include John Miller and Carolyn Miller and their daughter Lucille two missionary couples Norman and Joan Johnson Richard and Lillian Phillips and Betty Janet Mitchell.

Social Security tax base rises to 15100 next year

The base increases to 15100 for 1976 affecting about 18 million workers with a maximum tax of 895.05 for employees and 1208.70 for the self employed. Employers pay a matching amount and the change funds an 8 percent cost of living benefit for recipients. Beneficiaries may earn more outside income while preserving some benefits. The employee and employer rate remains 5.85 percent, rising to 6.05 percent in 1978.
